What I learned from recent trip to Oregon

I'm retired and have been growing indoor for myself and my patients for 2+ yrs here in Phoenix. It's been fun, lots of trials and errors and tons of fun getting better and better at this. A friend in Oregon invited me for a visit, so what the heck...here's what I learned:

1) After visiting 3 outdoor grows and seeing the some of the same strains that are here in AZ, I was amazed. Plants grown outdoor in 300 gallon pots are placed 10 feet from the next plant and 7-8 feet tall currently and will veg for another month before starting to flower. All three growers had last yrs. grows yielding 5-8 pounds of bud per plant. Everyone had well cured bud from last season for their personal stash, and it was good!...really really good!! Probably kept the best for personal stash...I would :)

2) Growers with patients get an average of $1200 per pound at harvest with $200 per pound in hand trimming costs. Those that wait until after Feb, get an average of $1500 per pound at the local co-ops and dispensaries will be coming soon to Oregon. I did visit two co-ops that had some A and B grade buds costing $150 to $250 per ounce.

3) The people and life style is kick back and mmj is an accepted part of the small communities. Driving around on back roads just miles from small towns you will see plants and grows....a lot of them!! One old-timer I met at a taco stand invited me to his country store, and took me on a drive to his favorite fishing spots and some cool houses. At around 5pm we were talking at a picnic bench outside his store, drinking a beer, smoking a cig, and 2 customers joined us and fired up a joint and passed it around...nice vibe

4) Checking out some houses in the country was fun...we had to wait for mom and her doe to cross a road, wild turkeys and their babies wouldn't get off one dirt road we were on, and a baby deer in a wild blackberry patch jumped out and scare the shit out of me...I'm sure I scared it too!

5) I've put in an offer on the dream getaway place on a river that the salmon run, so I'll be at the next farmers market donating my veg plants. Their big and I'm proud of them, but after my Oregon trip, I can see my patient cards run out in Dec. and I'd rather grow less plants that are much bigger, go fishing when I want, and spoil some deer into coming to my yard for dinner

Makes me want to move
People there are way cool, compared to Cali people, trust me.
I remember back as far as 1974, we'd go shopping, and could leave your car windows down at the store, pass 15-20 people you didn't really 'know', but they would say "Hi", and nobody worried about theft or vandalism, neighbors within 20 blocks of each other might borrow tools or groceries, but any and all issues were dealt with internally, no neighbors complaining to the law or the stuff we have now.
It's still pretty much the same, just on a larger scale.

My grandmother did tell me stories about the loggers though, going out in the morning, and in the afternoon coming back missing one or two men.

What's the winter like?Rad's from Fukishima getting to the fish?
Most of the state gets snow, higher elevations more.
In 2007, I had enough snow in Roseburg that it filled the bed of my El Camino, stayed long enough that the roads cleared, and I drove a 6 hour drive down to Cali, and dumped a load of snow on my buddy's porch and freaked him out when he got home.
He KNEW I was in town.

i live in the portland area.

starting at about the second week of october, it starts to rain, and doesn't stop until next may. there is a two week respite in late january/early february where you might get some sunshine, but it will still be cold.

from mid-april to mid-june, we get sun with intermittent storms: short, heavy bursts of rain, maybe some hail, high winds, etc.

after mid june, it tuckers out. by 4th of july weekend, the rains are gone and don't come back until october. summers here have almost zero rain, ever.

winter sucks because it gets dark by 4:30 pm due to us being so far north. with the heavy cloud cover, it is often effectively dark by 3:30 pm. the temps stay between 35 and 45 and it is always raining. if it gets cold enough to snow, the skies will clear. if we ever do get snow, it is usually just a dusting and melts by midday.

the upside is that it stays light until damn near 10 pm in the summer. my buddy just moved up here from chandler and was amazed by how late it stays light.
