A must read for every US citizen

Here is the text of an old document that I think everyone should read. For the US, every citizen should have read this before. I think more people should read it and again and again and again and take heed to it. We dont have to take shit from our government.

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. Just an honest question: is this meant to be insulting by implying that Americans aren't smart enough to know the basis of their own country? Or are you implying that we no longer adhere to the principles outlined in our Declaration?

I am not implying that us Americans are not smart enough. I think we have just gotten lazy and have lost sight of what the basis of what our country was founded on.

Alright, I can agree to that in a general sense. I'm not sure if it's that a lot of Americans are lazy, but rather that they've been duped by the propaganda of an undemocratic administration. Unfortunately, people are easy to control when you pander to their fears.

My interpretation to this is that we the people have the duty and obligation to police ourselves. By lazy I mean that we quit policing ourselves so the government stepped in and started doing it for us. Its "our" fault.

Surely you're not implying that this problem didn't exist before the Bush Administration, are you? This goes back long before the current administration.

The onus lies on us, the People...We've forgotten what a Representative Republic means and we've allowed our representatives to use that to their advantage.

If I am ever asked my views I certainly dont have a problem telling. I have been doing that for years. I feel I am old enough now that I dont have to give a shit what society thinks.

Did the citizens of our country ever really police themselves though? I don't think so. I mean, over the past two centuries our government has definitely become more centralized (which is what I think you're getting at), but the people have never really policed themselves. We have always had someone else do it for us. Marbury v. Madison and McCulloch v. Maryland are perfect examples of government intervention very early in our history.

Are you proposing anarchy or some sort of quasi anarcho- system as an ideal means of political existance? And if so, which kind and why?

I love political discussions, so please don't feel like I'm criticizing you or trying to prove you wrong or something. I'm just interested in your arguments.

Oh no, I've been around long enough to know that Bush Jr. was not the start of all of this. I'd throw most of the blame all the way back to President Jackson. He was the one, in my opinion, to start the most prevelant and pervasive changes in our system of government. I'm sure other administrations prior to Jackson acted inappropriately too, but I feel that the Jacksonian era is when we started to truly lose sight of our roots.

I think our republic works exactly as a republic is meant to, though. Machiavelli's description of a republic is astonishingly similar to what we experience today. That being said, I don't see republicanism or democracy as ideal forms of government. So it doesn't really make me happy to see that our republic works just as a republic should.

I just believe that things are always evolving and changing, specifically societies. Every society does need a government, obviously some are more desirable than others. But as a society changes so must the government, we are not here for the government, the government is there for us. However, our elected officials are no longer there for us and many have their own agendas. This is why it is our fault, we the citizens have allowed corruption into the very core of what the founders of this country idealized for a free society. It states in the Declaration that the citizens have the power to change how we are governed, yet every year we re-elect the very people that are causing the problem. Now the government has suppressed society with much of its propaganda and fear on many levels and now society is afraid to speak out against the government. Screw that I pay taxes, and therefore I pay their friggen salaries, they work for me not the other way around. I have serious problem with me paying someone to tell me how I should live.

YES, YES, YES AND YES......Way to be a true patriot! I love you, +rep for having some balls and speaking truth.! Now I wish all of the middle and lower class(the rich could join too, I doubt they want chance though) citizens would all stand together and say those same words!!! Marvelous!!!:mrgreen:

It would have to take all the classes. There are two types of rich people; ones that worked their ass off to get rich, and then there are the greedy rich people that no matter how much money they have it is never enough. We the people could fix that ourselves easy enough, we dont need a government to fix that issue for us, we are more than capable.

RKM, with ALL DUE RESPECT... you should name the document which you reference.... yes many of our less educated members might not actually KNOW that that is from the Declaration of Independence (well at least the first part... not all the following "HE" statements.)

Personally I'm always shocked by the number of people who don't know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Ummm HELLO PEOPLE.... learn some fucking history!

With that being said... unless you are suggesting States try to secede from the United States then I don't see how your post means much... other then to educate people about the reasons they might vote for secession (which may in fact be a good idea! given the scoundrels currently IN office.... and the ones running for office!)

I happen to LOVE the Declaration of Independence and I've read it in its entirety several times over. I LOVE LOVE LOVE American History.......

A document that might prove equally important to our members is the Constitution of the United States of America (for the ones who don't know....... it's the one that starts with "WE THE PEOPLE...")

I'm not a Demorat OR a Republican..... I'm one that thinks both of these parties and their candidates STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN! Yes.... I want change.... I want to see the destruction of the 2 party system. How can we SHOVE freedom on other countries when we don't stand a chance at electing a President outside our 2 party system?

Sign me a disgusted and pissed off American!

P.S. I'll waste my vote on an independent.... I'll NEVER AGAIN vote for one of the Big 2!
