I disagree.
The purpose of carrying a gun should be unnecessary, however due to parents and their lack of dicipline and lack of attention to their children's behavior, and our society's (fairly) recent found belief that spanking is 'child abuse', which limits ways in which a parent can dicipline/ teach a child, more and more people like the kid the OP is talking about, are the reason we need guns ourselves.

quick question, how is your legal system over there, regarding crimes against others? Perhaps the problem in the US IS the laws, but the ones that keep criminals out of prison. I think that even if we had no guns, the number of violent crimes would still be as high, as would burglaries. We have revolving doors on our prisons, IF we can even get thugs prosecuted. Our system is set up to protect the criminal. If someone broke into your home and you smashed them over the head with a bat, can they sue you for everything you own, and win? They can here. Or is the UK more like, someone breaks into your home, you catch them, say "oh, you cheeky monkey, try some other time, now hurry on" and they laugh and leave?

I'm still a firm believer in the "shoot him, stuff a knife in his hand, then 'fear for your life' " philosophy.
"fearing for my life" was actually suggested to me as to what had actually happened to me just before smacking a guy at the base of the skull with my Maglite while he was trying to ride away on my niece's bicycle.
Also, partly, another reason I didn't go to jail that night may have been because the cop asked the vagrant who lay bleeding, crying and half conscious in the middle of a 4 lane street "Bob, what are you doing with a bicycle? You don't own a bicycle.", after which I learned that the cops, sheriff, and Highway patrol all knew him by name. (I had 3 jurisdictions there due to the location.)

I, in general, don't like cops either, especially where I am here in the south now, but when I was back in California and Oregon both, I had several good friends that were P.D., Sheriff, and Highway patrol.
A few times, one of my buddies on the local force, even went to the length to let me know I had a bench warrant out on me, that he had been 'overlooking', but another cop had mentioned he was going to start looking for my car.
Another night, whilst making a liquor run for my drunk in-laws, I happened across the friend in the liquor store parking lot, and he called me over, and we chatted for a while, all the time I know he could smell I had been drinking for the past 10 hours.
He used to come hang out at my shop, we'd chat, he would speed off to write a ticket for a speeder then come back, we would smoke cigars together, I worked on his personal vehicles, went to his house and drank, etc.
One day, he heard on the radio my address, when the wife called the ambulance for my daughter, and by the time I got there, he was there, and gave me an escort to the hospital a few blocks away, and somehow, we beat the ambulance. LOL
What I'm saying, wasn't addressing the cop issue, I was just saying we shouldn't NEED to have guns to protect ourselves from stupid fucks like the kids in the article, and thieves and such.

One would normally count on a bear attacking, so you always steer clear and have your guard up, but you know where you will and will not find a bear.

of course we shouldn't need them, but i don't live in a dream world and happen to watch the 5 o'clock news from time to time and kind of understand the world we live in..

don't get me wrong, i absolutely hate violence.. don't even think i could kill an animal if i had to eat it... i probably would if i were hungry enough, don't get me wrong, just trying to point out how much i hate violence.. i think it's sickening that our great country has so many murders, it's absolutely beyond my comprehension how people can live life this way..
