How to Build a ScrOG Screen (Tutorial)

Been scrogging for years & didn't no it, with no screen or support. Carefully twist all branches on a semi-daily bases, you will develop a feel of how much you can train/bend/twist them. It's very hard to break a stem if you twist it between two finger, with a little practice. Makes them strong as trees.
bit off subject, but what does the acronym "scrOG" stand for? I know what it is, but acronyms kill me!

SCROG = Screen of green.

I like your screen, good design for sure. I have made several and my most favorite by far is made from 2"x 3" "poultry fence" from home depot that is zip tied to a 1/2 conduit frame. You just bend the conduit frame into a rectangle and join the individual pieces with the conduit unions they sell in the store. I have three 12' long scrog screen made that way. Super light, and bomber. Hang the screen from the ceiling. Legs on a scrog screen are a PIA.

good thread!

Coulda swore SOG was sea of green, referring to a rotational style.

scrog = not sea of green style. use of screens to keep foliage evenly distributed.

i thought i knew that part but... did i get misinformed?

If you intend to ScrOG your plants then you should use low stress training to make your plants get branchy. By bending your plant over you can expose light to the nodes (at the base of each leaf), exposing them to light makes them grow branches.
I've been bending all my plants thank you for your advice! And first time LST"ing" and learned that bending too much means C R A C K !!!!! I snapped one of the ladies had to tape her up real good. Hope she doesn't die on my ;)

Just as a little botanical FYI.. Exposing shoots to light doesn't make them grow. Pulling the dominant growing tip
Down BELOW the other tips will cause a redistribution of the growth hormon auxin..which generally makes the next node below the one you just bent grow to become a dominant shoot..or attempt to be.

Auxin is the hormone responsible for making a plant bushy. Be it topping, super cropping or LST.

Scrog on gentlemen

At what plant height do you recommend starting the SCROG? I have two chambers going into my grow box. One for the mother which I will take clones from, and a flowering chamber obviously. Do you SCROG while they are vegging before flipping to flower, or only during the flowering cycle? I have never scrogged and this is the first scrog specific tutorial I've read thus far.

Thanks!

It all depends on how big you want them to get. You start to train before the flip. The key to mastering scrog is determining when to flip in order to fill the screen when the stretch is done.

If you give us the height of your room, hood, and wattage info we can help you determine the Max height of the screen

Hello Legally Flying tonight I will be transplanting 8 plants into 3.4 gallon air pots. I have a 4' x 4' x 6.5' tent currently vegging for 34 days under 400w/mh and will flower under 600w/hps. I have been training them for the past week or so. I still have not built a screen but will do so this week. What should I be doing next?

Thank you :)

6.5' equals 78". So 78" minus your hood height (10?) - 24" of space between the good an top of the plants that you will want for the last week/week half - 12 or so inches that you want the plants to grow trough the screen =you want the screen about 32" from the ceiling or roughly 3' off the ground. Hanging the screen from the ceiling is easiest IMO.

I would think that you want bigger pots to flower in. I'm not captain soil but I would think 7 gallons minimum

I am actually in the process of building my cabinet. Haven't started the grow, just starting the research process. The cabinet sq. footage is very small. Each chamber is 2ft x 1.5ft, height is just under 3ft. Strongly debating between CFL or ordering a Diamond series DS100 LED (100w). I am doing a DWC grow as that is what I know. The bucket will only hold 2 plants. I don't intend to go BIG by any means. Just debating on whether or not a SCROG is worth it for this small of a setup.

I would put a 1,000 watt HPS in that chamber and make brownies. :)

I determine the hight of my screens on a case by case basis, theres just so many variables that effect the screen hight.

  1. veg time
  2. stretch/ genetics
  3. number of plants/ grow space ratio

For example if I have more plants I might veg them less time and have the screen lower, if I have less plants I might veg them longer and put the screen higher.

Today I took some pictures of the canopy hight in both my flowering closets so you can see the difference. This first picture is from Flowering Closet #2, it has 6 plants (3 kush, 3 unknown) that have been in flower for 1 month. As you can see the screen is very low (<1ft above pots):

Here in Flower Closet #2 we have four OG Kush #18 plants that have only been in flower for 2 weeks. As you can see the screen is much much higher (>2ft above pots):

All of the plants in both pictures are in 5 gallon pots and both closets have 600 watt HPS lights, they both get the same everything. Anyways, my point is that if I had tried to plan a screen hight based on the specs I would have failed miserably for at least one of the two.

I wouldn't just say that scrog is worth it, id say its necessary. I just cant imagine any cannabis plants growing through maturity with only 3 feet of vert space without having been trained to grow horizontally. Especially when you consider the vert space used by the pots and the light. I hardly know anything about the grow you are planning, but based on what you have told me I would definitely recommend that you use lots of low stress training and a screen!
