Using House and Garden Cocos A+B with Canna Coir and I love it. I didn't read their nute calculator (on their site) during flower so ended up using Top Booster for way too many weeks, too early. Did a flush, all OK now. They have someone answering questions on their site which is pretty useful if you read the column. I think the author told someone, though, that you don't have to flush H&G at all- strange as I can't find anyone to agree with that. They just added an Amino Treatment and Multi-Zen- didn't use these but will in next cycle.

I asked their rep why they recommend using basically the same levels of A&B nutes throughout both grow and veg when plants need less nitro in flower and he replied that, "Some guys reduce Part A in Flower." Not very helpful- reduce by how much? Also, that's gonna get expensive as my hydro store requires both A&B be bought at the same time...Anyway, haven't heard that elsewhere.

Also, I use Botanicare's CalMag (sparingly) and Great White (which their rep says is great with Cocos) and stay away from Hygozyme as they say it throws off the Ph.

Have fun- think you'll like the product.
House and Garden nutes = GREAT
House and Garden nutrient calculator and service reps = SHITTY
I say shitty because their calculator was all fucked up telling people the wrong dosage of nutrients.
YOu should flush with House and Garden ( a short flush at least ) House and Garden is one of the cleanest nutrients on the market and they still have you add drip clean to every feeding/ reservoir change so a 3 day flush is sufficient.
House and Garden and CAnna are pretty much the best coco nutes, I read a rumor where the owner of House and Garden used to work for Canna , he broke off and started his own nute line ( both are from the Netherlands).
I started out using coco chips and I would pre charge them with Liquid Karma and Cal Mag so I dont have to add any during my grow. A good bath for 24 hours in Cal/Mag and Liquid Karma is good for coco.

I was under the impression that I dont need to "flush" so long as I water my coco until I have some good runoff in the tray below. This is what Ive been doing so far but only at week 3 now. I just water my coco by hand and make sure theres a good amount of runoff and no flushing, Should I definately be flushing? Im also not using drip clean, do I need this as well?

Im glad I have H&G, lately Ive been finding alot of good reviews on their products.

i go through a 200l tank of nutes every 6 days with 6 plants with 2 waterings. every 7th day i flush with water and rhizo then start the next week of nutes and they seem to love that

oh and HG coco and canna nutes rock!!

Lambofgod, what did you use to get those amazing pix? Computer scope? Which one? Nice.

BeaverHuntr, would you pre charge Canna Coir with Liquid Karma and Cal Mag too? You pre-charge the chunks but I am liking the coir (although it is expensive.) Would you mex perlite into the coir? I hate the stuff myself but for the cause...

Just flushed at Wk. 8 for the first time and runoff is like 600PPM. But I've never had an EC over 1.9 so I guess that accounts for it (?)
thanks for your thoughts

I have never used Canna Coco Coir it didnt become available in AZ grow stores until 2011. I really want to use it next grow doing House and Garden Cocos on a drain to waste, I am considering pre charging I dont know I have to do more homework on the Canna coir, and I wont be using perlite in the mix at least not now unless someone recommends it.

I really doubt you need to flush, flushing is always good but these H&G nutes are so damn clean you probably can skip the flush if you want. Its all personal preference.

just a standard off brand 12.1 MP camera. Save yourself the cash$ and don't get perlite, no need for it with coir.

Ok well I will not be flushing then unless I come across something that says I need to, I find it confusing all this talk about flushing, because I thought everyone just waters until you have runoff, even with house plants in soil I would water until i have runoff... so its a mini flush everytime you water already, when and why would you ever need to do a "flush" unless you overdosed your nutes or something.
Is it possible to aquire beneficial microbial life in coco? Id have thought you could do it with coco if you mixed some cultures into your water and then just used a bit of mollasses or a carb booster with every watering? I havent seen anything confirming this anywhere though and Im using Humic acid and Fulvic acid which as I understand are sortof a subsitute for what microbes would do for me if I were using soil. Am I understanding this all correctly?

flushing and run off are two different things.

flushing = kick to the stomach

run off = leeching some small salt build ups from previous feeding

as long as you give decent runoff in coco there is no need to actually flush the plant unless you are dealing with burn or some type of lock out.

yes beneficial are possible, look for a granular mixture to amend the coco if need be. Some people do organic/synthetic blends to build up organic material (myself), imho this isnt needed. I saw zero difference between running plain synthetics VS running a synth/organic blend WITH granular micros. No difference in weight, no difference in taste or final smoke. So take all that with a grain of salt.

synthetics FTW!

also before I forget....Beavr! the pre charge thing is a genius idea. I know I've touched on this subject a couple times in this thread here and there. I did finally try it, soaked a 5kg brick in 4 gal of water (as normal) but with 4ml/gal of cal/mag+ along with an extra 1ml/gal of my grow nute. I must say I did see an instant difference from just popping them in plain coco. Took off much faster, much more vigorous!

Would you recommend mixing a little H2O2 in with my straight synthetic mix to keep any bad microbes in check? Im imagining having no good microbes would be an invitation for the bad ones to come marching in

thanks for that response btw very concise

Yeah a buddy of mine does it and it worked wonders for him so I tried it and I love it. I also precharge with liquid Karma just be careful fungus gnats love that stuff, and man you notice a increase of foliage with liquid karma. I'm looking at doing another coco run but this time with top drip drain to waste.

I started my own thread asking this question but only one person responded so I'm going to try and post it here.

So I want to make the transition from soil to coco mostly because i'm getting bored and want to try different stuff. In the past I've used fox farms ocean forest mixed with a bunch of perlite and I've fed mainly with jacks classic all purpose and bloom booster. Everyone says feed at half the dosage so that's what I've been doing and I've had pretty good results. I've battled with a few deficiencies/lockout issues but they were minor and I found the soil to be very fogiving. I've never had a ph meter, I've just used the drop tester and would get it pretty close to where I wanted (I dont mind if the PH drifts a little)
and I never had a ppm meter because again I just fed at about half the recommended dosage.

Here's the thing...In preparation for my switch to coco I got a ppm and ph meter and calibration solution for both and I was curious to see at what level I've been feeding so far. My tap water right from the faucet is around 150...when I add the amount of nutes that I normally do (jacks classic all purpose and bloom booster) my ppm's only raise to about 270 and when I use full recommended dosage the ppm's are still only around 535 for the bloom booster and 390 for the 20-20-20.
I keep reading that in late veg and flower my solution should be anywhere from 900 to 1200 so does that mean I have to use 3 times the amount of nutes suggested?! I mean I dont mind since jacks is relatively inexpensive and seems to work pretty well. Then I started thinking how I've gotten away with under feeding all of this time and figured the fox farms soil must've made up the difference. But that's just a guess. So my question is should I be following the directions on the label or my ppm meter? Putting almost a tablespoon of nutes into a gallon of water kinda freaks me out.

Side question: If I transplant a plant from a 3 gallon container filled with fox farms into a 5 gallon with coco would that be a bad idea? Where should my ph be in that situation? I'm thinking around 6.5 ish? the same as if it were all soil?

Any advice or help greatly appreciated

I have not much experience, mostly just going on things Ive read but I dont think sticking a rootball that was formed in soil into coco is not a very good idea at all.

youll never find a happy medium between what the roots in the soil need and what the roots in the coco need.

your fox farm soil must have been providing the rest of the nutes, theres no way those ppm's would have gotten you through flower in soilless.

If your already in 3 gallon pots yourll probbably make it until harvest.

You should be using a Ph 5.8 for coco

First off happy new year, and congratulations on the switch to coco....you my friend will not be disappointed.

Second, smart move on the PPM and PH meters. (more so the PH meter as when you get your strains dialed in a ppm meter becomes useless IMO)

Now, time for me to sound like an ass. Switch nutes......

I know nothing about Jacks...but I know something about coco, stick with a nutrient line designed for it. If Jacks is formulated to run with coco then ignore the previous ignorant statement.

Get RO water. It is not a must, but you will be pleased with a the end result, and the lack of BS you may endure otherwise. Also make sure to get a calcium supplement, unless that is you decide against RO in which case your water will be full of calcium.

300ppm early early veg
500-800 ppm Full veg
1000-2000 ppm full flower (adjusting up then scaling down through flower)

These numbers are just guides. Some strains act way different. For instance, I have 6 strains one can take up to 2kppm without a hair of burn, were as I have 4 other strains that would wilt over 1200. So to be honest its a feeling out process. But with the ppm meter it will help with the number game.

Actually you could plant that root ball into a 5 gal of coco....go for that shit. I wouldn't do it in flower, and keep the ph at 6.0 so the soils ph doesn't become funky and fuck with the coco's ph, if it were to be in straight coco 5.6-6.0 is a good range. It may stress, but will bounce back.....it's a weed.

So my question is should I be following the directions on the label or my ppm meter? Putting almost a tablespoon of nutes into a gallon of water kinda freaks me out.
thats a great a question. Don't let it freak you out. I use Botanicare CNS17, made for coco. I use 2-2 1/2 tablespoons per gallon when I water. Thats my nutrient and not yours though.

Do a test, just using that ppm guide above raise the ppm every so much every week, if you see burn...obviously to much. If she seems healthy green and no signs of deficiency then stick with the number you got. Also always remember to get sufficient run off in coco.
