Ozone Generator

Hey I've been battling powdery mildew this whole year on and off. I am sick of it surprising me here and there so I bought an ozone generator to keep it dead. It is called the OZN-jr and covers 1000 cubic feet. It runs in 10 minute intervals, 10 min on, 10 min off. I am in a 4x4x7 DR120 grow tent and need to know if it is safe to run this ozone generator. I don't know how to control the ozone level let alone monitor it. I need to kill off this mildew but don't want to harm myself or my plants in the process. My tent is in my bedroom so I'm sure the ozone will be exhausted right into my room where I live, is this safe?

You don't want to run that in your tent at all, it's not good for plants, or really any type of life form. While they do kill fungal spores in the air, it's meant more as a means of destroying odors in our application. I can't think of a decent way to adapt one for tent growing.

Right now the plants do not have any mold on them, If i let them go a week without spraying though it will surely return. I want to use this unit just to keep the air cleaned and mold spores dead. I have a carbon filter so smell is not really what I got this for. I'm thinking I will have to do this, right now my carbon filter is outside the tent at the end of my exhaust (air just blows through it into my bedroom). I think I will have to buy an inline fan, move the filter hanging inside the tent, take the ducting outside the tent where it ends at the inline fan which will sit in the window sill which forces all the exhaust air outside the window. I am not worried about harming my plants, I am more concerned about harming MYSELF because I have to live in the space that I grow. I believe if I set up my exhaust as said above, most of the exhaust air will be safely expelled outside and then only the inside of the tent will be exposed to ozone.

Return the ozone generator, buy a sulpher vaporizer. Ozone is bad for plants.

no one is answering his real question.

Yes, O3 in high ammounts will damage your health and it will be obvious. Your throat will get scratchy, your breathing may becoming irritated etc..

However, as long as you run it on low levels, should be ok.

Worst case scenario, get a bucket of what is called...ONA GEL!

So here's what I got accomplished today. I purchased an inline fan and a digital timer. I moved around my exhaust, I moved the carb filter from the outside to the inside, then ducting goes out of tent, thru inline fan, and more thru more ducting which blows directly out the window. I am currently messing with the digital timer to get it to run the ozone gen for 10 minutes every hour. I feel like this is a safe amount especially with all of the air circulation going through my tent. Also, buildup is not an issue anymore as all air inside the tent (the only air receiving ozone) is directly exhuasted outdoors now instead of into my bedroom.

Thoughts?

Ozone is NOT dangerous for plants. Its dangerous because the people selling ozone machines dont inform their customers how to properly use them.

7 x 4 x 4 tent = 112 cubic feet. Your ozone generator is TEN TIMES the power you need. Which means you want to run it for 10% of the time. That means 9 minutes OFF and then 1 minute on (or 18 and 2, whatever).

Ozone generators dont do anything for mildew though, they just help remove the stink from air. So while using it as directed here, it still wont help your problem.

A dehumidifier might!

Inside the tent: Carbon filter --> Inline fan --> ducting to outside of the tent

The way you have it now your losing about 60% of that fans power to having to suck through such a small tube. The carbon filter is designed to have the fan attached directly to it.

Yup I did this calculation too and I was going to play with 5-10 min per hour. Why do you say an ozone generator won't help the mildew? My humidity is rarely above 40%. The ozone should kill airborne spores when o3 is made into o2.

And very good point about the fan, now i'm pissed cause i mounted it on the wall and got it all set up. But it is working fine, still have negative pressure in the tent and temperature is normal.

I didnt know the Ozone generators helped for mildew. If they do, cool!

For the fan dont sweat it as long as your temps are fine. If it gets hot, then go through the hassle. :)

Sweet thank you for the great advice. Yes ozone is obviously extremely unstable and pretty much wipes out everything in its path. I'm praying I never see mildew again, i'm wondering if it will kill the mildew thats on my plants or only the airborne bacteria, i'll have to look into it.

PM is a fungus my friend :)

Also, there is a lot of debate whether it can be systemic or not - I my self scratch my head at this because sometimes i see evidence of systemic issues, and sometimes pureley airborne - ,-.

PM is a bitch to get rid of, and is generally an indication of:
1. your clones are from a shit source (99.999999% of the time)
2. your air circulation is just too poor

But to speak on number 2...even if you have AMAZING ventilation, if you have PM to begin with, expect it to stay with you all the way through the grow. It is a tough bitch to get rid of, id even say harder than mites.

The best thing is, and i know you wont like this, is preventive measures.

Best of luck friend.

be careful not to run your ozone gen too much it will kill your plants if too high. (i learned this the hard way many moons ago) :(

I used it in my tent grow last time around, attached right to the intake on my DIY Bionare F150 scrubber... no smell at all for 6 plants in a 3x3x7 tent, and no damage to the plants. the exhaust for the whole unit goes right to a double window fan, and out.

but the damned thing only laster three months, and i cant find out where to send it back to get it serviced under warranty.
