Normal for ph to keep moving?

I am running the ebb & grow with 12 pots. Most of my seedlings are now about 2 inches tall. I set my ph at 5.8 and within 2 days it is up at 7.0. Just wondering if this is normal. I havent added any nutes yet. My res temp is 60.

THANKS and I will +reps!

it will. as soon as you get nutes in there most nute brands have a PH buffer to help stablize it but your going to have to wait till
they get bigger. next time grow them up in a DIY or other system to get them begger so when you put them in the large system
you can go strait to feeding nutes.

Why is it normal and desired?
5.8 basically is the middle point for nutrient uptake. U kinda get all the nutrients at 5.8. However If u start off on the lower end of 5, u get better absorption of Mn and Ca, then as it goes up u get better absorption of P and Mg. So, slow climbing you better cover the gamut however u will get deficiencies if it stays at one end too long. If u keep it at a steady 5.8, u usually wont get deficiencies. Moral of the story - don't jockey your PH

Thanks for the explanation pdillo. I have been adding ph down about every 2 days which I heard is also bad but after 2 days the ph is at 7.

are u filtering the water. im no expert but i believe the ph is supose to rise but at a lot slower rate i think its supose to go up that much over the course of a week. and is everything light proof

Yes there is a filter and pump in the res. I also have 3, 1 foot long each, bubblers in the res. Im not sure what exactly what u r wondering is light proof? The res is a 55 gallon drum which doesnt get any light. The plants are in hydroton and I am doing a 3 times a day 30 min flood.

Yeah, 7 is no good for anyone. Slim chance of this being of aid, but I just remembered this obnoxious PH issue I had a few years ago when I bought this sterilite tote to use as a res. I practically dumped a half bottle of PH down in the thing before figuring out it was the sterilite… but generally most plastics will work fine… if the drum was doing the same thing it would probably be going much higher, and be a lot harder to knock back down.

PH issues can also be a sign of root problems, are u using h2o2?

No h2o2 yet. I cant find it anywhere around here and Im scared to order it online... I just started up my res up a week ago. My plants are still seedings but seem to be doing very well. One of my plants just got its 2nd set of leaves:)

are you using tap water if so this could be the issue as allot of the additives put in to cleanse the water for drinking like chlorine will dissipate out over the next couple of days after leaving the tap and can cause ph flux's. so if you are using tap i would let it sit out for around 24 hours at the least before using it in the system.

:( Yes it is tap. I may have to see about getting another drum to store the water in while the ph settles down...

yup this may be the culprit. i use tap its not bad at all just try to store some and see if it helps best of luck.

when i asked if everything was light proof i meant all of the containers. if u can place your hand on the out side of the container, place it up to the light, and see any type of shadow then your containers arent light proof ( most arent). if your containers arent light proof algae ( excuse my spelling if not correct) can grow. when they process the nutes in the water they produce waste that raises the ph. and when i asked if u filtered the water i meant did u filter ther water that u used to mix the nutes. micro organisms in tap water can cause a constant increase in ph as well. simply filtering the water and then mixing the nutes will slow this down a lot. and cheap ph down breaks down quickly as well

Sorry...Yes everything is light proof. I did not filter the water out of the tap. It is straight tap water. I read somewhere else about using a Brita water filter. How good do you think one of those would be?

hey genuineapbts you still having ph issues?
Yes and its driving me crazy. I talked to the guy at the dispensery today and he said dont worry bout it too much. He said just keep doin what Ive been doin but to not adjust it more than 1.0 is 24 hours. So we'll see I guess. Its still hitting 7 just about every 2 days.
