How long can you store weed in glass jars?

Hypothetically if you wanted to save your stash in a nice cool bunker somewhere, or bury a large box of properly cured weed in air tight mason jars...how long would it last?

im not exactly sure how long weed stays fresh...but i have some buds from my last grow that are almost 12 months in jars and they still taste and smoke bomb!!!!

I was wondering if I smoked an ounce a month, and just put an ounce into each jar, if I could squirrel away 2 lbs of harvest every year (one full tent harvest hopefully), after 5 years of growing I would have 10 lbs, or 160 ounces, or a 13+ year supply stored away. I could retrieve one per month, and not worry about trying to find bud for over 13 years.

I'm not planning on doing this, but if the bud won't degrade or go bad for a long period of time I wouldn't mind having some stored away rather than selling it, putting the money in the bank, then potentially trying to buy weed at a future time. Seems like I could just have my own little weed savings bank.

lol i hear u man!...every time i go into my jars i inspect my buds just incase....if its 100% dryed and cured then i dont think it can go bad in an air tight jar..i may be wrong though..

I have heard it will store well for at least a few years if done properly. Havent heard 5+ years though

Sounds like a great idea! Might try it aswell, saves money/drama. I kind of dont have any advice, I dont even know how long marijuana stays fresh. Ill look around though and get back to you mate!

Probably wasn't sealed quite like a mason jar would though. Hehe

Dry, air-tight and cool temperatures(60F) without light. Not cold or frozen, it causes the crystals to drop off the weed, good for making kief but bad for smoking buds.

I've seen bud go for 2 years without loosing any potency.

I think they found kief in tombs like several thousand years old and it still had it's potency. THC will last for ever if you store it properly. The dried plant on the other hand might not last as long. You might be able to go longer than 2 years.

World's oldest marijuana stash totally busted

Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.

A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.

They apparently were getting high too.

Lead author Ethan Russo told Discovery News that the marijuana "is quite similar" to what's grown today.

"We know from both the chemical analysis and genetics that it could produce THC (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase, the main psychoactive chemical in the plant)," he explained, adding that no one could feel its effects today, due to decomposition over the millennia.

Russo served as a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany while conducting the study. He and his international team analyzed the cannabis, which was excavated at the Yanghai Tombs near Turpan, China. It was found lightly pounded in a wooden bowl in a leather basket near the head of a blue-eyed Caucasian man who died when he was about 45.

"This individual was buried with an unusual number of high value, rare items," Russo said, mentioning that the objects included a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp. The researchers believe the individual was a shaman from the Gushi people, who spoke a now-extinct language called Tocharian that was similar to Celtic.

Scientists originally thought the plant material in the grave was coriander, but microscopic botanical analysis of the bowl contents, along with genetic testing, revealed that it was cannabis.

The size of seeds mixed in with the leaves, along with their color and other characteristics, indicate the marijuana came from a cultivated strain. Before the burial, someone had carefully picked out all of the male plant parts, which are less psychoactive, so Russo and his team believe there is little doubt as to why the cannabis was grown.

What is in question, however, is how the marijuana was administered, since no pipes or other objects associated with smoking were found in the grave.

"Perhaps it was ingested orally," Russo said. "It might also have been fumigated, as the Scythian tribes to the north did subsequently."

Although other cultures in the area used hemp to make various goods as early as 7,000 years ago, additional tomb finds indicate the Gushi fabricated their clothing from wool and made their rope out of reed fibers. The scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it's evident that the blue-eyed man was buried with a lot of it.

"As with other grave goods, it was traditional to place items needed for the afterlife in the tomb with the departed," Russo said.

The ancient marijuana stash is now housed at Turpan Museum in China. In the future, Russo hopes to conduct further research at the Yanghai site, which has 2,000 other tombs.

mine is over two years old and great. I have it stored in vacum sealed bags and refrigerated.
At the rate it's not degrading I suspect it will be good at 5 years.

I would imagine if you made bubble hash or honey oil and stored a block of it in an opaque jar you could have enough hash to smoke for a year in a single 2-quart mason jar that has been blackened... a couple of those may last 10 years....

The key is whether it is truly air tight. I would store the mason jars in another air tight container. That way I would say 5 years is a cinch and 10 is possible. I would hesitate to go for 13 but who knows. Besides, after that long who can remember how good it was and how much it may have degraded?

I don't believe "airtight" is the way to go (even though it sounds logical!). Once you seal the jar, I think the curing process stops. Plus; if there is any excess moisture , at all, BAM - you got mold!

There are still lots of "Pre-Castro" Cuban Cigars being kept in well maintained Humidors; they come out even better than they went in, back in the Fifties. So that's like 50-60 years of curing. It seems to me that if it works for Tobaco, it ought to work just as well for Marijuana! A humidor is just a fancy wooden box with a source of moisture (to control the proper state of hydration).

On the other hand, long term storage has never been my problem!
