Hydroponic vs Soil

Ok so here is my breakdown of what I thinka about the topic, I generally disagree that using a hydro system will give you a better yield then using a soil system. I will agree that there a hydroponics system has a faster growth rate but is the yield any better ? Just because something grows faster does not mean it grows bigger, ecspecially in with the same amount of light and space. If you factor in time over a couple grows then hydroponics systems will have a small edge in yield. However if you have a seperate vegitation room, then the timing is not the issue.

If you have great aromatics, this is a only an opinion and is only relevant to your growing skills and the methods you use. If done properly, soil will give you buds that will smell as strong as those that are done in a hydropics setup.

I tried a hydro setup and the reason I switched back to soil is my time factor, hydro will eat your life away :) hydropics systems are expensive to setup and they alot of monitoring so your whole crop does not get fried. Using a soil system I can water on friday and go away for the weekend and my marijuana plants will be fine. If you were to leave a hydro setup and something were to go wrong you could wipe out your whole crop. Granted something could go wrong with a soil setup however if you loose 1 or 2 I would not be to worried.

There you have it... my thought on soild vs hydroponics, hydroponics will give you a better growth rate but I do not believe it will give you better yields.

From my experience, soil will give you a much better taste as well. Soil is more forgiving (for me). I prefer outside in the dirt, thats the way they were meant to grow (IMO).
Im not knocking hydro, and it will definately be much faster from start to finish, but I haven't seen much difference in yield just because its hydro.
My girls like it in the dirt! :leaf:

It depends on the purpose I would suppose. If you are able to grow faster, you'll be able to ship it off faster. If you are growing it for your own purposes, then I'd imagine doing it in soil, because, as matt said, it'd taste better.

As long as were on the subject of soil and all. Which do you prefer to do when it comes to soil, make your own mix or use soil thats in a bag from a nursery. For potting of course.

GO AEROPONIC

there is no doubt that the turn arund time and yield size for indoor growers is far superior when growing in a HEALTHY hydroponic or aeroponic system.

If a grower invests in all the proper tools (testers, ppm, ph, fertilizers etcetera) aeropnics is not only the largest producing method (weight) but the easiest.

With the advent of dosers and automic fills on reservoirs.. there is no comparison to an automated, fie tuned aeroponic system.

ilove soil too.. but for the BLING and the turn around time.. AEROPONICs

I totally agree with Garden Knowm. I am using dirt right now and I hate the watering, the mess, and the growth rate. The only good thing is the taste and if something goes wrong they dont all die. lol.

Airoponics I think is cheaper. You need a pump, maybe some hose/ pvc pipe, A nice big box or a few. Some baskets, sprayers and thats about it.

With dirt It cost me $10 a bag. That gives me about 10 plants only cause Im not using enough dirt in my pots. It should be 2 plants im sure. Anyways pots alone. $3-4 a pot and I need 300 of them. Those two factors alone, I could prolly build 2-3 airoponic systems of the same scale.

But you old guys just stick to your dirt and skunk buds. lol :bigjoint:

Yeah if I was not where I was (to many people coming and going here), I would have a Hydro set up, and not soil, but soon I maybe heading to another part of the Country here, and i am looking forward to working with Hydro there for the winter. :leaf:

i beleive as most of you agree that soil/organic grown weed tastes much better and yeild between the two are not very different. If your growing for personal use i rekon soil is definately the way to go. But if your planning on commercial/dealing i would say hydro is much more efficient.

Grow bags are 30 cents and work way better then pots

You looked at those pictures and then you tell him about grow bags?? Move a grow bag with one hand. OK now do it 300 times. NOw rinse all 300 out to re-use. Any questions? VV

ok he was saying 3-4 dollars a pot i said grow bags are 30 cents and why would you reuse them there cheap and it dont look like 300 plants anyway some do hydro some do soil I just hope you have a genarator in case of a power outage

why would you do that when tending to them in the first place was a complaint or is it suddenly easy to tend to the 300 plants and I didnt realize hydro growers stay there 24/7 in case of power outages also root rot and so many other problems show up in hydro any questions?

This next grow I am planning, I intend to use the hempy bucket method - a simple bucket with a hole near the bottom, fill with perlite and vermucilte, implant your rooted clone/seedling and water with nutes. It doesn't get much simpler than that. I am currently exploring a way to cheaply design and build an automatic watering system for those times when I am away for more than a day.

I just grew my first grow in soil at the same time as my buddy did his in Hydro with the SAME clones! His yield was 4 times mine and I vegged 3 weeks longer. He did use a more powerful light, but the difference was freaking ridiculous. I setup hydro for my next grow (which I just started yesterday) and I expect great things. I spent the money on all the meters and all the right equipment and I know I'll get good results. Soil invites pests, it's messy, if you screw it up your plants won't die, they just stunt like crazy and it's hard to flush and correct the issues.

Transplants are a pain in the ass, pots take up a lot of space, there's just so many reasons that you can get bigger yields faster if hydro is done right. In my space I can get 8 plants in hydro or like 4 in pots large enough to grow them with good root space.

To say that the yield isn't increased is just foolish. It's obvious that plants that grow bigger produce more bud. I can get my plants ready for flower in 4 weeks flower for 8 and be done and get 8 ounces from my 8 plants.

In order to get an ounce a plant in the same space (relatively small) I would have to try to use 4 plants in soil (pots would have to be big) and try to LST or top them and get them to really branch out. Could be veggin' them for 8-12 weeks. Extra month or two just to get comparable results.

Hold on laser....you yourself said he used more powerful light. I'd sooner attribute the bigger yield to that over the hydro. From everything I've read and talking to people who grow, the PRIMARY advantage is the speed of growth. People also talk about hydro having a better taste once cured but I don't buy that. I've tasted well grown hydro and well grown soil and they both tasted equally great. JM2C.
