topping affects different strains differently and the different pheno's of that strain differently, it will increase yeild for some but not others and it depends what kind of lighting you have, sometime topping is more efficient . It doesnt instantly make plants yeild more, that not true AT ALL, theres way more variables in yeild and remember that you will stress the plants while topping and the side buds wont necesessarily be as big as that top cola would have been. Toppings for shaping the plant into a more efficent shape for the lights that you have, it will make it more bushy and wider so lights such as cfl's will penetrate better.

if you went to the store with x amount to spend and wanted to buy say ice cream would you get more if you bought 2 1/2 tints or if you bought one pint you deff have more packaging a plant only has x to spend and can spend it on one bud or two genetically you feel me

peace im out

I am a indoor grower and I top every strain I grow between 18 to 24 inches especialy saltiva. I get the best results topping just once

Seems to me if the lights are mostly overhead then a christmas tree shape would optimize light exposure to the buds, provided you have a strong enough light. You get growth in three dimensions if that makes any sense. Takes more space of course.

more bud sites can lead to less bud over all. not on all strains i do not top my plants. in fact i dont use any cuttings that have lost the primary growth tip either. alot of plants can get rather lanky after topping as the branches start competing with each other

i have experimented.. and I now top.. only to try and control height.. but I also lollipop the bottom 3rd of the plant... the difference - on my cali orange was only the length of time it took to trim.
I have spent 8 hours trimming the smaller buds from a topped plant and end up with 1/4 lb.. then next harvest spend 3 hours on the same amount of weight.. and had Way bigger buds by not topping..
best advice I read was richED.. I feel the exact same way. Your plant has a genetic make up on how much bid it's going to produce.. you can manipulate how that bud grows.. spread out over 100 bud sites.. or crammed into 5. just try it with one plant.. and compare for yourself. . abudsmoker is also dead on from my experience.
Just speaking from experience.. I am not link hunting tonight, sorry... but I wanted to chime in and give them some back up for giving good advice.
Good luck Bro!

EDIT: wiseguy is of course right too.. didn't want to leave you out.. you must have been typing while I was..

honestly, that's the best thing to do. You are getting advice from some seasoned growers, and from guys who don't know what they are talking about, cause they haven't done it to separate the fact from the fiction. Do your testing on one plant at a time.. and then the worst that can happen is you screw up one plant, but you'll learn from experience and what works for you. Good luck man!

My Blue Apollos respond very well to topping. I do let them recover for two weeks before I flower.
Every grow has been different and I have done comparisons with my plant. I have noticed that topping and bushmaster always increases my yields.

In my limited experience as a grower I only tried this once with our last grow.

I had 2 White Widows and 2 Free Leonards. Topped one of each. The topped ones were slightly bushier(they were all bushy to begin with though).

End result? Exactly the same topped or untopped. And I mean to the GRAM.
