air layering

ITEMS NEEDED:

PLANT!
matchstick or toothpick
tape
razor blade
rooting hormone (Clonex)
tweezers
plastic wrap
scissors
pin

(1)Sterilize all tools before using them.

(2)Cut a branch that is at least 1/8 inch thick with at least two nodes.

(3)Select area from which roots will sprout. This area needs to be midway up the main stem, with enough room on each side of the cut to fasten the bag.

(4)Use the Razor Blade to make a 1-2" lengthwise incision along the stem. Cut all the way through the bark, to which the phloem is attached. Don't cut into the xylem, which is the layer under the bark.

(5) A ring of bark is removed from around the stem. The phloem and cambium are attached to the inside of the bark, so when the bark is removed the phloem is also removed. This leaves the central cylinder of xylem and upward water flow unaffected.

(6)Get clonex and apply it to the exposed xylem. For increased stability, you may tape a toothpick or matchstick parrallel to the stem.

(7)With thumb get some grow medium. (perlite, peatmoss, whatever) Pack the wound carefully with the soil.

(8)Attach plastic wrap below incision with tape. Tape the vertical seam where the ends meet. The effect of this should be a funnel shaped plastic wrap enclosure.

(9)Pack with grow medium. Be sure to leave enough "slack" at the top so that it may be taped to the stem above the incision.

(10)Fasten closed with tape.

(11)Use pin to create holes in around bag. This will allow soil to breath.

Use an eye dropper to keep the soil wet. Do this every day. After 2 weeks, your cutting will have roots and will be ready for propagation.

Is this as effiecient as cloning? I know a guy who does this with full size oak trees and sells the airlayers as bonsia trees and as ornamental peices for landscaping... i know it takes him about 3 months to see roots

what is the benefit of this? It seems like it would be alot easier to just take cuttings.
It is. That's why nobody does this. It's not a new a concept, it's just a more difficult way to get a clone. Now if you have a giant oak tree...well, of course this way makes sense.

Taking cuttings, you need a certain man-made climate controlled environment, with certain supplies. If you have 50 Ladies out in the wild, it may be best to do the air-layering in the field, so as to not be forced to drag 100 to 200 cuttings home to baby-sit. That is what I meant.

wow, a lot of negativity here... I thought it was a great post. To the point, clear and concise. I knew about air layering but this just clears it up a bit for me.. very interesting though. +Rep!!

wow, this one's old! who's digging up threads from the grave? :p
Haha...I don't know how I didn't notice it was so old. I remember people talking about this shit years ago and I was wondering why it was coming up again.

I wonder what ever happened to Mogie. That should've been my first clue, but I figured "Back from the dead"?

And this is definitely a legit way to "clone" lots of plants and trees and layering is a technique widely used outside of marijuana circles. Cloning is just very simple for MJ and has a huge success rate.

I should add that the other useful bit for layering is if your plants has become wickedly stretched. This way you produce your new little root mass and cut the bottom off and replant lower. I'm not sure it's something that I would ever bother with, but it's the most common use of this technique. You've got some plants that are indoors and have become stretched or leggy? Use this technique to replant and remove the long leggy stalk.

could you do this durring the flower cycle? Will the air layer continue to flower or is this a bad idea.... I have a widowXdeath cross thats 4 weeks into flower and that was my last one... then the strain is extinct:cuss: no good at all... this is the killa budz... i dont want to lose it... I was going to leave the bottom few branches and try to reveg it under 23-1 but i tend to have bad luck with regrows

air layering is the shit.and outdoor or indoor it has many benafits surpast cloning. since i currently use this method i feel i had to say something. #1: it is an exalent way to ceep a steady supply of clones from a desired mother. wich for only 5 days maby longer aposed to cloning, you dont haft to deal with a qorter of the invromental facturs needed for sucessful cloning. no change in humidity, light, heat and best of all location. makeing it possable to vedge and clone at the same time with no alterations. #2: i have come to find(through experence and research) that when air layering a branch does not restrict the natural growth of the branch, or does so little you cant even notice and also its rooting at the same time.this gives you the benafit of rooting the branch, (transplanting it and eather flowering the seperated plant or vedge it longer), is that the seperated root system you can juice and rictor huge buds from working on its own rootpack. and yes it does equil out.the time and minimul effort it takes to take that airlay and bud it sperately far surpasses the productin if that branch where to remain intact on the originel plant. #3( and your gonna love this one) we have found you can actully take a plant in vedge and block the light off of half the plant(preferably the bottom) and contunue to vedge out the top, where you also take airlayers. this makes it possable to vedge clone and bud in the same room. co2 suplaments increase the effect of the rooting branch because its still feeding and dubble teaming that shit.
hope that could help or give some people ideas.

Can you provide pictures or examples showing the benefits that you speak of? It's hard to understand from just the description. You can root the branch while it's still connected to the plant and then how would you transplant it? I guess I'm a little too high to dealing with this right now.
