Does high power usage qualify a warrant, or just an investigation?

Does high power usage qualify a warrant, or does it merely create the basis for an investigation into achieving a warrant? How long could one expect such a warrant to take, assuming a worst-case scenario?

Neither.

High power usage is evidence of NOTHING. My power consumption in the winter is at least 3x what my neighbors around me use, because our furnace is broken and we use space heaters.

So far, no investigation has occurred, nor have the police showed up at my door with a search warrant.

Now, in CONJUNCTION with other "evidence", it is a characteristic of a cannabis operation to consume a lot of power. However, simply consuming a lot of power isn't enough for the cops to get a search warrant, and if they investigated EVERYONE who used a lot of power they wouldn't have time for anything else.

Pay your bill on time, and don't steal electricity. You'll be fine.

Good advice and make sure you don't throw incriminating evidence in your trash. An empty bottle of pH down, a Happy Frog fertilizer bag, *anything* that you use in your grow, can and will be used against you if you are under surveillance.

Keep most people out of your life when you grow. If you're single, stay that way, woman will get you busted more than the power company.

I don't think it's much of a problem, I just like to have all my bases covered. The supplemental power, ontop of my normal electricity bill, would be 2,000-3,000 Watts at the highest, and I plan to move apartments every one or two cycles as a way to keep the heat off.

i ran 6600w no problem. if the cops saw you on FLIR thats another problem... or even if they drove by your house with a dog. that could constitute a search warrent

No, they don't do that. There are some instances when LEOs can bring in a drug sniffing dog without a warrant (traffic stops and body searches in public are two of the most common scenarios), but they can't bring them on your property without one.

OK, good, that had me really worried for a second! Recall that I am talking about an apartment-type scenario, but from what you've told me I'm pretty relaxed now.

It occurs to me that that would be a great cover when asking if the electrical outlets would be able to handle the wattage that I would need, when looking at apartments. Could you tell me what kind of computer it is that uses so much energy?

I'm constantly seeing posts where people are scared to get or run a HID light because they think it'll use massive amounts of power.

Compare a 400w or 600w light to the following items in your home.

Clothes dryer or electric oven... 5000w

Medium sized window mounted AC unit... 900w

Full ducted AC... 3500w

Electric water heater... 3800w

Toaster or microwave oven... 1500w

Coffee maker... 900w

PC with 17inch CRT monitor... 240w

xbox 360... 165w
