150 watt hps Advice

I plan on using a 150 watt hps throughout my first apartment grow attempt. It will be a 150 watt Floralux HPS with an Agro bulb (more blue light) for vegging and a regular hps bulb for flowering. With the low heat i plan to keep it 8 to 10 inches away from the top of the plants (which i plan to top and LST).

My question is will this 150 watt Hps (16000 lumens) give off enough light to support two plants in a 16inch D by 16inchw by 48 inch H area and produce decent buds?

I think so.

Hey man, given Im no expert on the matter, I have heard several different things. I have heard that you want about 2000 lumens per square foot so 16000/6.25sq'= 2560
"
Plants in seedling and clone stage require about 400-500 lumens per square foot. In vegetative growth they require about 2,500 lumens per square foot and in flowering, they require about 10,000 lumens per square foot."
This is some of the info I/ve heard, however I believe the 10k lumens for flowering might be slightly excessive for someone on a budget. What I would do is set up your 150W and then supplement some light from some cheap and easy cfl's in cool white 6500K. Hope this helps

also I forgot to ask how many plants??? this will affect coverage area and light allocation. If it's only one then one 150w hps SHOULD be sufficient.

wow man thanks for all of the help with the lumens. this page will be a good reference. As for plants i plan to have 2, one each in a 2 gallon pot. I plan to train them and LST them to see if i can't get some more light outta my room. Once i outgrow this little tiny growtent personally i will make that my mother tent and buy another one for flowering.

What do you think??

hey man i have always heard that it's 5000lumens per plant.

Like i said man im no expert I just go with what i hear, and from what i have heard it is anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 so who knows???? Yeah that would work well for mothers and you can simply top them or even take clones to keep them the right size.

also lst would be perfect for this setup with two plants and what some consider "low" light. Have you looked into screen of green??? This is where you place chicken wire above your plants and train them to have more surface area so to speak. Look it up. WHAT I DO KNOW is that people grow plants with 3000 lumen cfl's so a hps that emits 16000 should most definitely be suffucient, Im not saying your going to have nugs the size of your hand or medical quality stuff but it will most certainly do the trick. If you go to home depot you can get work clamp light fixtures for 5 bux and cfls for 9-10 its worth it especially if your going to have mothers and clones, since they can be under cfls all the time.

from my experience with 70w hps in a 16x8 inch pc case.. you will be able to grow well over an ounce, probably 3-4 when you get used to the box etc.

And you will be able to keep the light much closer than 8 inches away.. my 70w hps is cold to the touch on the side the fan is blowing on it, with the canopy roughly an inch away from the bulb.

i have thought about adding a few warm white cfls to my flowering set up but i really like the fact that the only things i have to plug-in with my setup is the hps, and the two fans. Cfls might complicate things for me electrically in such a super small space. I dont want cords everywhere in my single apartment, little fishy.

Yeah I understand your caution as I am in an appt setup too. If you were to get them I would go with cool white until you flower then warm white. The awesome thing about cfl's is that they arent bad on electricity at all. Im not saying you need them, just saying 2-3 of them would really add to the lumens in your setup, on average a 42W will produce 4-5k lumens so it would most definitely be beneficial.

really? thats pretty damn close, i do plan on having a circulation fan blowing on my Hps/plants. And since i am using roughy double the power your using i will prob be able to keep it 2-3 inches away?

A cooltube, or a sheet of glass separating the the bulb from the canopy would be easy enough.

that would be cool. I am gonna be using the exhaust ports and fans to get rid of the smell so i could just buy a cooltube. anybody else think a cooltube would solve the problem of heat?

I completely agree, I think that as long at the temp around the top of the leaves is around 85 and no more then you are good to go. I have no glass for my 400 hps and everything works well, I have 2 glowpanel45's on each side and a 400 hps ion the middle. 3 fans, one circulating the other intake exhaust.
