oops, without thinking i rubbed my lips with the hand i just applied the salve and capsaicin on. i can now attest to the numbing effect the oil has, lol :clap::clap::bigjoint::fire:
Great thread!

My wife has severe pain in her lower back. I am in the process of harvesting and tried an experiment yesterday. I took about an 8th/oz that was drying and chopped it up and rubbed it in to the right side of her lower back at 6pm last night using a small amount of canola oil to help with the application. Rubbed it in then let it sit, then rubbed it in a couple of more times. This morning she can still feel the positive results. No pain in the area it was applied to and she could feel the pain on the other side and above the application.
I have a large harvest and will experiment with making creams and share results.

In the past I would scrap the resin off my fingers with my teeth and get that hot numbing affect. It never crossed my mind that the resin could relieve pain as a topical.
She has a variety of pain killers and last night avoided taking any to see how the topical worked. It worked better than we could have imagined. If this helps her while getting her to use less pills I'm going to be quite busy growing in the future.

Thanks I will.
Just applied some to her neck as she also suffers from migraines.
Did it the same way except replaced the canola with Johnsons baby oil.
This is just to see what the results are with raw material until I can attempt making the cream.
The buds I chose were harvested about 6 days ago. I went to 3 different plants at different stages of drying and chewed on pieces to see which on gave me the best result as far as heat and numbing.

Ok, I made a batch of the basic recipe last night. I used 16 grams of bud/leaf I had left over from an outdoor grow I had to pull early, so hopefully there is enough active ingredients to do some good.

I did decarb the cannabis first. The whole process was pretty easy/fast. Since it is for topical I didn't filter the coconut oil to death, just wrapped a stainless steel strainer with a single sheet of cheese cloth to filter. The cheese cloth was on the outside of the strainer so it went pretty fast.

Extracted the weed in the melted/heated coconut oil, filtered, melted the bees wax, added back the coconut oil, added some olive oil, and added essential oils (peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus and lavender). I didn't add any heat via pepper or evil sauce. It was set up morning.

It works well without any further dilution. It melts pretty quickly as you apply it.

I've only used it since last night, but it seems like the pain in my shoulder has gone down and I'm not getting the zingers anymore when I overextend it. I'll have to go to PT so it doesn't freeze up on my, but at least I won't be in agony.

Pretty happy with how easy it was. Hopefully it will do the trick.

Glad to hear it helped.
I cant wait to get started making a batch. Long time smoker, brand new to topical. I chopped up some buds for a second time and mixed about 3 grams of raw weed with oil. It was drying for about 8 days.
I'm sold and will make the creams.
Pretty excited. Smoking never helped my wife's pain even when I bought seeds for pain. This works better than I could imagine.
My wife has arthritis pain on both sides of her lower back. 1st time I applied it to the side that hurt most and that side had no pain vs the other side that did for about 24 hours. Second application was more liberal on both sides of her lower back and was left sitting and occasionally rubbed in for 45 minutes and it lasted for 30 hours the second time giving relief on both sides.

I'll definitely be searching for strains to grow designed for topical use.

The bud I used wasn't a high cbd strain. I have some pennywise and quirckle (both 1:1 cbd varieties) finishing up now, so I may try those in another batch. I guess you could put cbd distilate into it also, but at $30-$50/gm, it's a little pricey.

I'm not taking the pricey route but do have plenty of buds to experiment with. ;)
Since the 8 day old buds worked so well, my next step will be to decarb some today and apply it tonight the same way I did on the second application. We have let the pain return each time to see how long the application lasted. Each application took a while to initially kick in.

When I start making the recipe, I have a rice cooker and a slow cooker and will probably also do some in a pot on the stove when mixing in the oils and raw material for the recipe and will share results from all three methods.
I read somewhere that someone took the cooked oil mix and applied it directly with good results. Going to have to try that also. :peace:

very cool, to both of you. so glad some form of a topical is working.

i agree, it's not immediate relief, but can be felt after it has had a chance to absorb and take effect.

Don't know if you might like to try it but here is a quick and no fail salve recipe. I make it in a toaster oven that I put outside because it's gonna stink. Heat the oven to 225. Line a pan with foil. I like to use pint, glass jars of coconut oil. Like the Trader Joes. To make one jar (2 cups), I use an ounce of bud and 1/2 ounce of 17%cbd bud. Line the pan with foil.Don't shred the buds. Don't need to and it actually cleans up better. Cover the pan with foil as well and put all the bud into the 225 degree oven. Leave it alone for at least 1/2 hour. During the half hour that the bud is decarboxylating, Spoon the coconut oil into a large pyrex bowl, as large as you can fit in your toaster oven. I add a tablespoon or two of sunflower lecithin and heat both in the micro until all the coconut oil is melted. Take it out and whisk the lecithin into the oil to mix it well. Return it to the micro and heat for another 2-3 minutes. Be careful. Hot oil can easily burn you if you spill it. OK the bud is decarboxylated so take it out of the oven, uncover it and add it to the hot oil bowl. Put it back in the toaster oven and bake for about an hour at 225. Take another large pyrex bowl or metal pot and place a strainer basket in it. Place cheesecloth doubled or tripled over the strainer basket. Dump the oil and bud into the cheesecloth. Leave it alone until it is cool enough to handle. I twist the cheesecloth and squeeze every last drop I can get out of it. You won't have lost very much of the original volume of the oil. I pour the oil back into the glass jar that I took it from. I usually double this recipe. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place and I've had it for years without refrigeration. I've also made it recently from 2015 bud and it works well.

In cooking with it, you can use the cannacoconut oil for any recipe calling for butter or oil. Makes excellent cookies that keep a long time in the freezer. You can add some to morning oatmeal or fry your eggs in it. You can also just swallow about 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon as it is. It tastes good.

If you want to make some salve, Pour some of the oil into a small jar and add about 1/20th by weight of beeswax, not parafin or candles unless they are beeswax candles. Heat up the small jar in the micro carefully and mix in the beeswax. It's only purpose is to help the coconut oil remain semi firm in summer time. I don't add anything else because it is too expensive for those oils. You would have to make a batch of salve large enough to last you for decades to use up the expensive oils that make it smell better. It smells fine and works without all the foofoo. The salve will keep for years and is an anti-biotic, antibacterial ointment.

Awesome thread man appreciate you taking the time to experiment with this type of salve.

I've been waiting to start experimenting after I harvest so I can go ahead and actually do things such as this. Would you say that capsaicin burns or just heats up the skin surface?
