I'm really wondering if anyone has spend more than 1000 dollars on a light. And was it worth it? Bc I have 1000w hps only paid less than 500 and it works amazing super nice size buds and covers a 5x5 with no problem! I've seen ppl building lights for around 6-700 and I've seen many leds going for 1500 to cover a 5x5! I'm having a hard time justifying spending that much!

That's true, 800w of ready-to-use LED light would cost upwards of $1500. You can buy 2 400w kits for $900 that's pre-wired and ready to throw onto your frame if you DIY or buy a pre-built frame.
You could piece it all together yourself and build from scratch for maybe $750 plus a frame.

If you switched over you'll be using about 200w less at the wall and dealing with considerably less heat which could equate to A/C cost savings. Also, no more bulbs to buy....

I have 1100w in a 4'x6' and I'm happy with them.

I want to build one it's just the money I mean shit for 200 bucks I could throw a bigger ac in the window and fix my heat problem during the summer! But I really want to build my own cob light! It would be nice to use that and always have a back up hps!

I really just can't afford to spend another grand before summer is here!
Here you go.

Quickest, easiest way to DIY a 1,000w HPS replacement for less than $1,000. If you REALLY want to DIY it up, you could save some money with a Samsung LM561C strip build (the F series seem to be the most popular) - you can find many build threads here.

That actually looks great and right up my alley! Do you have this light? What's ur take on it? Also would u choose the 3000 or 2700 color??? It will be a 100% flower light!

If you want to build one you can easily build a light that will replace a 1000W HPS for under $400. Forget COBs - Look into F-Series LED Strips from Samsung or EB strips from Bridgelux..
Twelve Samsung 44" 50W strips - $166 (600W total)
Three HLG-185H power supplies - $165
Another ~$50 or so to frame it all together. No heatsinks are needed.

Throw in another 3 strips and up the power supplies to HLG-240H for 750W for about $80 more.

The first LED I built covered 18 sq/ft, about 750 PPFD, cost about $1800. Vero 18s cost a little more back then and I used individual drivers for each cob which had some logic to it as far as keeping the light running in the case of a driver failure, but made it cost more and efficiency on those drivers was 87% I think.

I could build the same thing for about $900 now. I would probably opt for Vero 29C in which case it would cost around $1200, but would be a good bit more light for the money.

I could save some bucks with larger sinks and fewer cobs, but if I wanted +60% efficiency it would still make sense to use the radials I used back then. Almost nobody has used them, but for their size they do a really good cooling job. Probably the best extruded performance, very thin too.

I've got a bunch of sinks like those - dirt cheap, they cost me under $30 for ten.

What's the extra driver in the bottom left for?

It's not extra. 23 sinks but because of the pattern there was only room for 22 drivers and I had to double up somewhere.

Yea, those sinks can be pretty cheap in bulk. I ran Vero 18g5 on them which was close to 20 watts of heat at 1050ma. They ran a bit warm (but operated for 3 years with no issues). Vero29 at 500ma would be a lot more lumens and about 10 watts of heat. The g7 Vero 18s aren't impressively more efficient than g5 but would still be an improvement over the old ones.

Best 600w you can buy imo, over $1000 on amazon..

https://www.amazon.com/Top-Shelf-Light-600-Horticultural/dp/B0732185TF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517973745&sr=8-1&keywords=led+grow+light+600w+duolux

Myself, I just got some cheap Viparspectra's, but I think this is the Cadillac. Would cover a 5x5 pretty well.
Says it's the highest ppfd of any 600w led yet my SE-450 has higher. Mmmmnnnhh!!!
BootyChew!
TopShelf is BS. Go watch their YouTube video bragging about being the highest par led available then showing a map of ppfd 550 from a light that should be @ least 800.
Then listen to the claims & blatant exaggerations by that slimy salesman kid.
