to much stress on autos to trim you can do it but with very short flowering and veg time the time itll take to recover may cost a bit for final yield try leaf tucking or using a screen

I would not worry about trimming until the colas form, then the plants can react to the trimming better since it will coincide with its timeline better,

never knew anyone to top their auto way to go !

I fimmed mine (sour diesel) at 6 sites (main stem and 4 lower bud sites just below the main) as well as fimmed another site on the side just to see what would happen... and topped one because i snapped it and couldnt repair it so just took it all off as well as the nub and 2 rounds of defoliation and she is beastly. This pic is from about 5 days ago. She is all filled in now and more bud sites have appeared and/or climbed to the top...I wont be doing anymore LST on them as I dont want to risk breaking the stems. If i do any tying it will be only to support the stems/buds when they start growing in. I have about another 3-4 weeks left on this one

This is after the last round of LST and defoliation. She get to affected from first cut imo. I also fimmed my dark devil only at one bud site (the main stem). Dark devils from the last 3 I have grown I dont think like being fucked with.

So im going to say the auto myth about topping/fimming is definitely true. its a myth. lol.

FYI: she is a little droopy because she's was out of the light for about 30mins while I was doing the LST on her and it was watering day as well. A long process (LST) but well worth it in the end.

thx man. I am pushing for 50 plus bud sites on this auto. Did not expect this at all tbh. Was hoping for it with the way I was training her but definitely did not expect all of her bud sites to be so prominent. She should begin her stretch around the end of this week and be ready by end of February is what I am anticipating. Well she better be because I am running out of room and my photos are going to need to be flipped 12/12 within a month or so...So I am hoping she will be done by end of Feb latest so I can harvest her and let the 2 other photos run their course.

Letting the 2 photos get to about 10 nodes (1 is at 5 nodes the other at 3), then going to top the main stem and fim the 4 lowest tops. This is a new technique i learned from a fellow ROI grower. Going to see how what the results are by doing this along with my aggressive LSTing. I am gung-ho about LSTing my plants and any chance I see, I will take it. lol. I also do a lot of leaf tucking and shaping to make sure the bud sites are getting the most light they can get.

I start my first round of LST when it has two true sets of leaves. Then almost every day to every other day im doing one or two branches. Then every 2-3 days I move up the lines and add more lines to the new growth stems.

I also dont heavy defoliate until when I see pistils popping. The LST i do, typically will expose the bud sites to the light and when they start forming more prevalently, that is when I will do my first round of heavy defoliation alongside the LST removing most of the older bottom inner fan leaves working my way up the middle to the top. With the LST and the defoliation, the inside of the plant is fully exposed to the light. this is where I think most of my new bud sites came in heavily. I did two rounds of this method and many rounds of LSTing, so many i broke two branches - one branch tip (which I ended up topping) and the other which I used a 1/2 inch long piece of straw (sliced) and enough wrapping tape to wrap around the straw to hold it semi tight. This worked wonders and the stem, along with support has seemed to start growing back together. I will remove the straw bandaid in another week or so. I took the tape off to allow the branch to expand more if needed.

Will be adding more pics to my Critical + journal sometime this week. Possibly Monday, when I pull them out for watering and a little LST...Journal Link: http://rollitup.org/Journal/rayray747.978464/

Sorry for the rant, i get excited talking about this and like to be very informational as much as possible.

I have a couple northern lights as well. First one I made, the second one is from blimburn. At 11 and 12 weeks old. Slow growing over here.

Your plants look perfect. :hump:
your NLs are looking nice too. Cant wait to see them when they finish up...

Don't trim. Those leaves are there for a reason. Removing leaves hurts yield.
Yeah to block the light from hitting the right part of the plant :). As long as you do it at specific times (like the schwazzing technique), I think you are fine. I’ll be applying my technique (similar to schwazzing) towards my photos which I should be flipping within 3-4 weeks.

I don’t think my plant (an auto too) was affected negatively by the technique I applied to it besides rewarding me with many bud sites... going to be setting the branches so they stay in best position to grab light.

However I do agree if your new and have no clue what you are doing don’t do it. I’m new at growing what we grow but have gardened for many many years and have researched a large amount info and spoke to a few good growers...

Thanks for the comments boys your northern lights are searious plant to and a lot a people saying you can’t top em but it is a lot of bullshit it me first grow wanted experiment wit 1 ha I growing skunk 1s now to so I going do a lot of messing with them ha nice training with that plant buddy I having I problem with humity now it on 99 when I go turn lights on and it on 80 with lights on iv a load of wardrobe dehumidifiers hung up that are collecting a lot of water but isn’t dropping the humity the plants looking lovely dough will put up few pics now soon

Don't believe that. The right part of the plant. What does that even mean. Those old big fan leaves you lopping off are syncs full of reserves for the plant. Why hack them off?

I've yet to see a side by side grow show cutting leaves of improves yield.

I was being silly with the right part of the plant comment...:)

I’ve actually not done a side by side by imo my plant is growing wonderfully with my method. Granted I have no clue what she would be like if I had just let her grow without touching her.

But from what I see with her, she is loving what I’m doing. She’s also an auto and I expect a decent yield from her unless somehow removing some of the fan leaves will make all of her 45 or so Bud sites make small buds. I’m pretty sure what I’ve been doing has given me a large amount of bud sites vs what I would have had if I didn’t defoliate, LST, and/or leaf tuck or other tricks I’ve tried. However I’ve researched enough to know if done correctly it can only help you tremendously...I’ll have to try it out on my photos and come back with results. But who can resist having 45 or more bud sites? Why would you not want all your plants having that many or more bud sites.

I do agree tho that if you don’t defoliate properly, you could definitely hurt yields...however, something I’m doing I believe is on point so if done correctly, it can give you killer results.

Just my two cents.

Leaves drive the plant. Every study for various ants say that removing leaves hurt yield.
