Is smell intensity mostly a strain dependent trait?

I use same drying method and for some strains they dont smell spectacular and some do.

This blue dream ive been running smelled good but now that its been,in the jars a few weeks the smell is gone.

This shooks rum kush smells so dank though.

Both were dried right next to eachother.

The BD was harvested a tad early. Could that affect smell?

Harvesting early could certainly affect the smell. Many of the terpenes may still be forming and those are what give each strain it's distinctive odor. Too early, less terpenes, makes sense to me but I'm not certain that that is all there is to it.

Terpenes are easily lost and their role in how pot effects one medicinally is just beginning to be known in depth. Their roll in how the pot is going to taste and smell is well established tho.

Well it smelled,good but felt too moist so I aired it out and then it lost its smell. Its still a good moisture level. 60%

whenever I found a non stinky it was my fault.
over fed/watered-lock out/ph/pm=huge stink stealing culprits
I have lost the stink when I left buds to dry in my growing space, outdoors or left too long in a jar or harvested early.

Lots of factors can affect them for sure, I'd guess in this order based on my personal experience.

1) Strain/genetics
2) Environment/lighting
3) Harvest window and dry/cure methods

Ive had few strains reek in my time growing.

I usually big leaf hang dry for 7-10 days at 70F 50% RH.

Thing is the buds stunk before I elt them air dry for a few hours

does your nute mix have sulfur? i've noticed that helps with smells.

Yes. Its a full nutrient. 8% S

Genetics play a big part in smells, but so does growing environment , nutrient regiment, and drying/curing methods. Might need to back track and found out where it went wrong but could just be weak genetics, is it your first run with this genetic?

This is my 4th run. I did clone off clone though so maybe that watered the genes down?

A guy I was talking to swears by mycos and Atami Bio-NRG Flavor as adding more terpenes. He says it makes his strawberries juicier as well.

What do yall think?

The interesting part was the shooks rum kush was overfed towards the end. I cut it at 1.4EC when im normally at 0.8EC at cut.

You can't "water down" genes when cloning. It's like making a digital copy of a file, you can do it forever and it stays the same. The only thing that will kill it is lack of grower talent, cloning does not weaken genetics in any way.

You can run clones for years if you keep the source plants healthy so that wouldn't be a factor. Longest clone I have going right now is ~3 years old and I don't keep mothers so that's a lot of clone-the-clone offspring in that timeframe, they're the same as the original plant.

Tried supplementing with molasses for a while, didn't see any significant improvements and stopped. There's a ton of elements in high % in it, it could certainly have some helpful or detrimental effects, including lock-outs or burn if over-used.

I may just have to run some seeds and hunt for a new strain. Wanna do that anyways to have some variety. I havent run a seed in months and i got hundreds.​
