Thank you
Going to pick some Dunks tomorrow, going to love the look of the cashier when I buy them. We have snow on the ground at the moment.
I want to kill off all the fungus gnats before I order a worm bin. I was hoping for a Black Friday for a sale but maybe a cyber Monday sale.
Any thoughts on the Worm Factory 360?
Cheers

Youre welcome CCG

Re: the Worm tower:
I would say its over priced but a good design for starting out. If spending $100-140 Cad I would likely buy 10-15 strong totes at 100-110L each, so 1500 L capacity vs the 360's 30-50 L.. or I would buy some 2x4 and 1/4 inch hardware mesh.. Along with a sheet of thin plywood for the tops and bottoms if you don't have scrap pieces .. You could make enough worm farms that you could sell some and make a profit or donate them as gifts, or keep em all and make a tonne of castings.

These ones cost under $10 each as an example.

seems a bit too expensive for me at the moment at that rate id rather pay for the subs or the coots compost for around a 100 atleats that would go further hopefully in the future when i can maintain a notill style i might but shit i know its quality n stuff but still it all seems over priced 50 dollers for 20 liters fuck that think im gunna put that mony for stuff for my castings and start there lol i hate not having mony
25L actually eh so yeah just 50L if dropping a bill eh?
What is overseas shipping on 4 or 5 cu ft from BAS, I see they weigh about 36 lbs a piece, which might hurt. But yeah you would get over 100L.

I would check for you but after just trying, their site crashed my apps, plus they don't ship to Canada, man do I love & hate that.

Hey Calli!

How was your Elaine Ingram composting course! Did you learn a lot?

As for DE Rocks, NICE, glad you are digging 'em! They are one of our top favs, both for a top dress as well as as in the mix.. they have a lot of benefits! They change color when moist, to an orangish tinge, and back to white when dry, so as the mediums topsoil becomes less moist, you can tell which ones are ready for a misting or top watering just by color.

Of course, they don't clump up like the powder will, and they also interrupt many life cycles of various pests..and thats just the start!

I still like to powder anything used though, but thats just me, have you used it powdered to see if you note any differences?
Ah, DonTesla, I'm still learning so much! - there are so many rabbit holes to run down I get quite lost in there sometimes haha

Indeed, I have only been using the powdered form, never having encountered the rock form before.
In fact, I just struggled through using a compost-heavy seedling mix I made to contain a good portion of DE. To give you an idea of the amount of DE, the composition was:
  • 1.5L compost mix
  • 1.0L coco coir
  • 1.25L aeration (0.5L biochar, 0.5L pumice, 0.25L DE)
That - i.e. 15% - was definitely too much to add in powder form, especially with so much compost in there!
Actually, it was great for those tray thingies of connected ting pots - they hardly needed watering ever, and I made a few nice clones of my rosemary, sage and lavender.
But it co-created havoc in a larger pot I was starting a NorthernLights#5 x Haze in. The water holding capacity is enormous, and together with the compost it caused a weird state of waterlogging whilst maintaining a totally fluffy structure.
So based on this experience, I'd not recommend using powdered DE as part of the aerating component, but more like an amendment.
In my newest mix (reamending my old no till soil), I've accordingly only added 1,5 cups to 56L of substrate (so about at a 3/4 cups per cubic foot ratio if my math's right).

Now, in the form of diatomite rocks.. it's bound to be quite a different story!
Cheers! :bigjoint:

If you can keep that there light in the sweet spot, probably about 18" away, then you should be able to yield a gooey ounce or two. It should give you some pink trichs too but I would super crop it pronto, bud.
