No it's a sheet, 21"x 24", 3 mm thick. They have to be replaced eventually due to damage caused by absorbing the light. There are glass ones called dichroic that last longer but they work by reflecting certain bands rather than absorbing them. So where's the reflected light going to go? Here's what the color looks like that I ordered. I also got another one that's a 1/8 minus green, with 88% transmission, lighter pink color. I'll see which I like more. Oddly, I can't find one post where anybody else ever tried such filters for growing. Probably worried about the inefficiency.

I did. You'll notice I'm not advocating for high CRI for its own sake. I'm in it for optimal spectrum, which is something altogether different from CRI.

More !!!!!!!!! next time, someone might miss it. :P

Such filters for this purpose are a new idea to me. I'm very interested to see what you find!

The problem is that blue light, over low levels, reduces dry weight. That's why it's not good to use high blue types of white LEDs. HPS has 5% blue and seems to work well.
uhhhh blue wavelengths are shorter than longer wavelengths like yellow and red

Yes, SEEMS silly, but in fact makes perfect sense because green light has effects I don't want, like shade-avoidance responses. White light is too crude and colored LEDs are too inefficient so you just get white ones and filter out the bad parts, at least somewhat. There's a net gain. Besides, the pink is pleasant looking.

I respectfully disagree with the 'net gain' portion of the statement above.

Yet I'm keeping an open mind, because I'd very much like to see how filters affect the growth of the plants.

Green works fine for sunlight. Just saying.

Something intuitively rubs me the wrong way about calling any parts of white light bad. I am no expert, at all, but it seems like plants use sunlight holistically, using blue light to detect overall light levels, R:FR to trigger shade avoidance behavior like elongation and early flowering. Multiple signals, quantity and quality.

I can look out my window and see that more than the mere presence of green light is needed to trigger a shade avoidance response, not to mention this:

That's not to say we can't fool our plants into doing what we want, but a quick gut check and careful reading never hurt when reading studies. Any conclusion that calls white light bad should be pretty suspect, since white light is literally what drives 99.99% of life on the planet.

Left-2 Luna 300 4000k 80cri on a HLG 320-48
Right -2 Luna 300 Studio 3200k 95+cri on a HLG 320-48

I think the left side has a better reflective walls, then the right. all those angles and junk, are scattering light. while on the left side you have a more uniform surfaces.

I'm guessing you going to be with in spitting range of the margin of error so, maybe things like this matter...or don't.

It's just something to try, the filtering. I'm curious to see if there will be any noticeable effect, good or bad. Seems like an obvious thing to try. It was cheap enough to make it worth trying. I've seen at least one article stating that less than 24% green enhances growth, then it's about normal from 24 to 50% and above 50 it actually reduces growth. I'm pretty sure there's more than 24% green in 4000k COBs. Quote;

"The supplementation of blue + red LEDs could also be complemented with green LEDs. Illumination with more than 50% of green LED light causes a reduction in plant growth, whereas treatments containing up to 24% green light enhanced growth for some species". source

Hey all, And a big hey to Growmau5 Who's youtube vids brought me here. Great work on those DIY LED vids. I'm a total newb when it comes to electronics and watching those has made me remember just how much I enjoy learning!
Another great thing, its forced me to remember my password for this site which I havnt logged into in years. As you can guess from my pic I started off using CFLs years ago. I have spent the last 5 years with 600HPSs and I'm eager to change to LED

To everyone on this thread, why is it everyone only using COBs? Looking at blackdog LEDs and a lot of top brands they seem to use 3w or 5w single LEDs. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Since I was planning on attempting my own LED build using single LEDs I thought I best ask why you all don't. As I say I'm a newb to these systems so forgive my ignorance.
Just for a little more info I was going to build a unit of around 180x 5w LEDs with a mixed spectrum of 660nm, 640nm, 430nm, 450nm with some other spectrums, tiny bit of UV and some white, although unsure of wether that will be warm or cold white yet. I'm basing those colours on the chlorophyll A and B peak charts and the UV to increase THC.
Anyway if anyone has any opinions on anything ive asked or mentioned I would love to hear them.

i was all excited to hear about the new bigger drivers that cutter has coming with some of the kits but still can only power 8 cxb3590. not to say i'm not trying to get one but i have a 10 cob unit i would love to only have one driver for, guess i'm still stuck with two for that unit...

Simple answer; COB LED is much more efficient, not only than HID options but also more than Mars, Black Dog, etc. Spectrum is dramatically better than blurple LED, as well.
