Veg 24/7 or 18/6 for fastest CFL growth?

yes, it makes a difference. experiments have shown that 18/6 produces more females and a better root system, but 24/0 will make for more foliage.

Perfect. Thank you. I have been looking through the site and hadn't found too much for sure info on this. I appreciate it!

i veg under 24 hours. i have no problems. i have been in many heated debates over this one, and would rather not go through it again, but... out of the last twenty plants ive grown, 18 have been female, 24/7 lighting in veg.... my root structure kicks ass, and my foliage growth is great. however, in the summer, i back it down to 18/6 or 16/8 because it gets very hot here; lights off during the hottest part of the day helps my overall temps tremendously.

but, it is ultimately the decision of the grower. yep, that means you! and you, and you, and ...

Having tried both methods at length I'd say 24 hours light (particularly when using cfls) will give you bigger bushier plants. Or more foliage as Kind Princess rightly pointed out.

Certainly under cfl's I would never consider giving my vegging plants a dark period, they need all the light they can get.

You say tomato, I say tomatoe ~! You say potato, I say patatoe ! (old song for you youngsters)
Man, I've had experienced with both, I tried both. I've done 3 Hydro grows, and My best grow is the one I am about to harvest. My first grow I did 18/6 thinking it was more natural or "organic" . Compared to my now 24/7 grow, i'll always do 24/7 for vegging. Much Faster Growth and much more bushier too vegging 24/7. I came to my senses when someoen asked me
"well how natural or organic is Hydro growing INSIDE under space aged Spiral CFLS with chemical nutes"?

very good point!

glad to see other advocates of 24/0 :D, you have no idea how many arguments i've been in over this one...

Thanks for the input...I am a noob and this is good stuff. However, I am confused by Princess. Your first post got me thinking 18/6 for more females and better roots was the way to go. But it looks like you prefer 24/7 in your later posts. Is it your personal experience that 18/6 was no better than 24/7?

Yep, 24 hours until FLOWERING at 12/12 begins.
another convincing arguement is if you compare 24/7 to 18/6, at the end of one week, for example, your plants got a total of either 168 hrs of light or 126 hrs of light. Which one would give the most growth? and if you do the math for 4 weeks, it is a major difference and the biggest arguement for INDOOR artificial lighting growing.

Good luck

i personally prefer 24/0, it works great for me, and i have great fem/male ratios. out of my last 20 plants from seed, 18 have been female (cool temps, low p in veg ;) )

but, the statement of 18/6 comes from a very experienced med grower; he and we have fought several times over this issue, and i deduce that it's simply a matter of prefference. both work, i like 24/0, he swears by 18/6. in fact, there are many books that echo his arguments. but then again, there are books that support 24/0 too...

so, that's where i stand. hope it helps your decision, as i seem to be contradicting myself :p

Thanks princess and roseman. I will eventually go bubbleponic after reading Roseman's lengthy thread on his experiences. And since he agrees with your veg time usingn the system I will get, i will go 24/7 as well. Thanks again!

the only concrete reasons to use 18/6 is for money reasons (lights, fans, etc. cost money to run remember), and temp regulations like kp said... i guess if your veg spot isn't light tight either then it could help with being more stealth depending on the situation...
