It's funny to see Cree COBs popping up on Orchid forums.
The information is spreading.
Actually orchard folks were talking about them roughly the same time we were. When I get real bored i check out horti sites and stumbled on the orchard forums and remember seeing their conversations. It's good to get some info/opinions from folks who seem a wee bit less medicated than the gang around here :eyesmoke:. Candlepowerforums is another group of people who get this tech too.

Hey!

I was growing (vegging mostly) with two 300W (60x5W) Marshydros but I got VERY into LEDs and the tech behind it. THIS forum here is great, the knowledge and work by people like Realstyles or Supra and many others is so helpful!

So a few weeks back I decided I wanted a new light so I did some reading here and it didn't take long people that I decided on a DIY fixture with 4x CREE CXB3590 3500K CD and a Meanwell 240W 1750mA driver. Since I am very into PC building and modding, the DIY wouldn't have caused me any "problems" but I was hesitant drilling/tapping because I never did this before.
So ultimately I decided that I let the light build by someone rather than DIY myself. So I got the chips, and lenses from Jerry and the driver from mouser and the guy(s) from todogrowled.es assembled it for me. (Not related to them, but he did an awesome job). I am SO proud of this new light, especially the lenses make the light look very "professional" :)



I might at a later time, should I decide to expand my grow area recycle my old 300W Marshydros and put some COBs in it, just for fun and out of curiosity.

By the way I am usually flowering outdoors, up on the roof. I live in southern Spain and thankfully there is sun, sun and even more fricking sun. But right now in winter I have some Autos in the tent/greenhouse as a "test" to see how they'll do flowering under LED.
I am watching the plants now closely every day, I grow also peppers and herbs and stuff, how the plants will do with the new lights. The peppers and herbs in the meantime I moved somewhat away from the light since I learned that peppers need a max. 350 PPFD and herbs like Cilantro only 200-250PPFD. The light puts out about 650PPFD if I use up the entire 120x60cm (4x2'). So I might put the stuff closer together comes flowering time to get closer to 800-1000PPFD.

(This would be another topic re: lenses / reflectors. I see there is somewhat a decrease in brightness all the way to the left and right at the sides, to the wall, say the first 20cm from on each side. This is easily explained because further inward in the room, due to how the light spreads, in particular with the 80 deg lenses, the light "combines", like so:

Which obviously means that all the way to the left/right it's not as bright as in the middle where some beams combine.
Which also means that any number, say like lumens/PPFD should always be taken with a grain of salt, they are theoretical but in practice things might look different due to many different factors, ONE of them the shape/arrangement of your fixture etc.

I've seen lights where I had the impression that people overrate cooling in general. TBH, while "in theory" of course there are advantages (efficiency, output, life span of LED etc.), does it really matter in practice?
In my opinion, there is no need for a HUGE ASS 2kg etc. heatsink for a single LED module which is already underdriven and trying to run the light so the HS is basically cold to the touch. Some DIY fixtures I saw I had the impression that people went overboard with cooling.
If you look at my light bar above, the heat sink is very dinky! Only 1.5cm high. And I am driving the lights a little coarser than most, about 1650mA. The three lights to the right are basically " cold.

Next 2x2 growbox I will buy a heatsink from those USA guys again.
Ebay was cheaper but couldn't mount the driver on it without having to use spacers and was still very short on remaining space for other screws.

Going to test of the Samsung SLE series checking if their 3500K compares with Veros.

I only see one problem and this from lack of cooling...i have never heard complaints from too much cooling :).....always a good idea to add a significant number to Rth....thermal design is not static and even though a "big-ass" heatsink might appear to be "overkill", doing the math is the only acceptable means to make these statements peace:

It would be much appreciated if only people who USE CURRENTLY leds for mostly full grows, or vegetative grows using only LEDs.

hi I am new in here and u appreciate al the work you put in here. i have recently bought an apollo 8 grow light full spectrum and when i moved my plant from under the cfls to my new led setup its like dying whilst under cfls was thriving.. the leaves are all droopy and its like wilting and a lot of discoloration in the leaves. i keep temperatures around 20-25C and humidty at about 40-60% .The height between the light and the plant is 22 inches.any help please as i am really confused as i invested a lot on this setup. MANY THANKS FOR MAKING THIS GROUP . Any help is really apreciated

Looking at specs, the Apollo 8 seems (pretty much) the same as my (now retired) Marshydro 300Ws lights. I don't *think* that the light itself is reason for your problems, especially not at 22" which is way far for those types of light.
Could there be any reason that there is another problem, could be anything from ph related, over-watering (reason for 90% of people's problems), bugs etc. PICS WOULD HELP!!

My unscientific guess is that the light (while still a rather crappy light :) ) is still stronger and better than the CFL you had before, so now your plant is growing faster, needing more nutrients and now problems are showing which they didn't when you had a CFL and the plant was growing slower.

In other words: You must fix the actual problem (water ph?) nutes ? rather than something with the light.

As for those types of LEDs in general, NOT a *fix* per se, but only an emergency-type of solution....many times, adding CalmMag helps when you grow under LEDs. (I had times where plants ALWAYS at some point started to turn yellow, bottom leaves etc. My own theory is that it was an iron deficiency, not so mag Calcium, but pretty much all CalMag products also contain Iron). So try that. But know it's not an actual fix for what is wrong with your plant, if your water's ph is off or a nute problem you still have to fix this too. (As said above, would need pics!)
 
Got really cheap led light panels some king tm 450's x2.
They did amazing in veg.
Now in flower and two of my plants are rockin the trichomes so far.
Gonna make a page to get answers on some questions i have.
