Definitely a newbie question but I have to ask it!

I am currently running a 400w MH. I am constantly having to run an ac unit, along with 2 fans. Would I come out better running a 600w led? I definitely want to give my plants the optimal light but at the same time, I don't want to be using excessive electricity!!

For sure the led will be best option regarding your heat issues with the mh...just have to check price... but how big Is your grow area? 400w shouldnt cause that much heat problems..

I disagree. When Buying a LED, you get what you pay for. With the cost of a good LED being so high, you're best off air cooled MH/HPS. Also, cheaper LEDs don't have the depth penetration. If you want a better harvest, the closer you are to sun light, the better you'll be. On the other hand, LEDs are cheaper on electric, but the cheaper LEDs heat up quite a lot.

I dunno, my cheap pos LED is doing fine and temps are always 21C or around 70F Had issues before trying to keep temps up. Mind you this is a smaller LED.
It gives off no heat, my plants can touch it all day long all night long, but the light penetration is a little weak. Really is only good for one plant although I have 2 flowering under it.
300w (150w actual) will do something like this for $179 + $10-$14 month in hydro costs depending on where you live. I live with high costs so mines around $14month

Heres an auto under it currently using about 2/3 the light or less while sharing it with another plant. Def only good for one plant as the light spread is shit.

Edit: My light is also about a ft higher then the tallest plant so I can share it... not exactly the best light I'm giving either one of them atm

Also, this is for personal usage. Not 52lbs a year

Not true. 900 watt MAR2 kicks off a crap load more heat than 1000 watt KIND. As I said, you get what you pay for.

heat sinks. watts = heat period. it affects the room the same way period. heat sinks dissipate it differently is all.

1000 watts of LED is same heat as 1000 watts of HPS period. room temps will be the same- what you feel coming off the u nit might be different however

I'm not gonna argue about, but I have reps for both companies and displays for both, setup in my store. I know which one I'd choose for a cooler run.

It's a closet grow, about 3x4x8. I have a small window unit in the room with a box fan and an oscillating fan. Temp stays at 77 and humidity at about 40. It justs seems like it's using a whole bunch of electricity. Can't really afford a high prices led but if the cheaper ones won't do, I'll just stick with my MH.

The only other thing if you really want to change your lights for veg area would be the ho t5's, but your only real usable light will be right below the fixture.

Maybe I joined the thread late, or maybe took an extra toke and am not grasping everything correctly, but I have a quick question for the OP, where is the AC unit? In the room or in the closet? Is the AC actually hanging in the window so the exhaust is venting outside the home? Not meaning to be dumb, just asking to make sure. If it is set up that way, can you duct the discharge over to the closet to better utilize the cool air?

Yes, it is in the window across the room(a very small room) with a box fan blowing towards the closet. The heat is actually not a problem...I was just wondering if I'd be able to eliminate running a window unit if I switched to an led, in hopes of cutting back on some of the heat put off. I have been informed that the led (especially one I could afford at the moment) would not grow the plants as well as the MH, so I'll just stick with the MH, I suppose. Some ducting is an excellent idea that I may look into! Thx!

Thanks man..just couldn't put the picture together in my head, appreciate the clarification...I am running two advanced platinum LED's in a closet for flower and I have some heat issues, but not that bad and fans help. Not sure of the temps the MH you have put out. Do you keep the closet open?
