As the nights are now beginning to become quite cool I was wondering what effects this may have on a long flowering sativa. As it is now getting down into the low 50s and even high 40s at night will this trigger the plant to think that it is nearing the end of its life cycle and trigger faster flowering? The strain is advertised as having a 70 day flowering period and this is about the maximum amount of time it will get until hard frost. I have heard of people having to flower it much longer (13 weeks +) but that was indoors under constant temps I'm sure.

How many weeks are you in, this is 100 percent natural, most go into flower once the air turn cool. Indoor growers will feed with very cold water to send a signal to the plants to begin flower.

i think its consistent cold weather, that will give plants that extra push to finish but i also noticed it will slow growth quite a bit. one plant i had last year didnt start flower till the 1st of sept, at about week 3-4 the buds didnt get much bigger, and the plant started to finish, with fading leaves, pistils turning, and the buds swelling.. but much earlier (on the week count) than the others. i harvested that one at 6-1/2 weeks, (could of gone a little longer but it was done enough) while the others looked that way at week 8

In order to get back on the path towards maturity, the temperature must rise over 60?F (16?C), along with sunshine to provide energy for photosynthesis.
When temperatures slips down to 40?F (4?C), leaves, flowers and other plant parts suffer from extensive damage. It takes some time for a plant to recover from this damage, and it is unlikely to do so under normal fall conditions because cool weather is usually associated with cloudy skies. This limits the energy available to the plant so bud maturation and THC production is curtailed.

yer cheers, cause i accidently grew them to big the light can only get to one side of the plant and thats were there turning purple, the other side of the plant is still green. so im guessing that means its going to bud better one side of the plant

At this point, I'm sure your plants are dead, since it was getting that cold in august where you live. If you want to grow weed outside in the ground then you have to either grow weed that is bred for your environment or you need a greenhouse (or you can make one out of 1" pvc tubing and a roll of painters plastic). The last few weeks of a plants life is the most important, and that's also the hardest time to keep it growing right. If you live in a rainy environment, you have to keep it dry and if you live in a cold environment, you have to keep it warm. Ed Rosenthal says that you shouldn't let it go under 60. If it is in the fifties, it shocks it a little. It can be killed by repeatedly dropping into the forties.
In the pacific northwest there's a strain of weed called cinex. It is mature by mid September, that might be a good choice for you next year.
