DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

greetings colleagues!
I need your advice.
I have a problem with brown slime algae on the roots. Im going to use physan to kill harmful microorganisms. As i know, flushing will be enough for removing physan from roots. I use rockwool and i suppose that i should soak it with physan solution, in order to suppress algae growth. I need to flush it too, or just wait? How long should i wait after using physan before adding bennies?

hi all can i use tap water

conni
Yes, you can use tap water. However, tap water does contain chlorine or chloramine. You must check which your tap water contains. If it contains chlorine you must leave the water out for a day for it to dissipate. You can also put an air stone in it and bubble it to speed up this process. This is done because chlorine is known to kill bennies. Chloramine on the other hand I've heard is much more difficult to get rid of so if you have that in your water post back here and someone will help you out. :) Good luck!

I know you posted this many years ago, but I am sure I am not the only one that finds this still very informing. I am currently running a DWC unit and have noticed over the last two weeks my roots have been slowly yellowing and the plant is growing slow (like a 1 1/2" over the last two weeks). As soon as I noticed it, I did small dose of H2O2, cleaned and changed rez, then they look beautiful white, but still slow growth. As soon as I notice it starting again, I repeat, about every 4-5 days. I don't notice or feel any slime at all on roots or in rez. Nothing looks off. I am currently using ice cubes or frozen water bottles to keep rez temp down to 67-70, but it likes to get up to 73-74 sometimes. So would using the tea work for me ya think?

Z7 and Mykos WS and you will be right as rain. No shit, just went through this with a clone that brought slime into my system. Forget H2o just deal with bacteria cause its there to stay, let it be food. My plants have just frickin exploded, I need to cut back on ferts now. Just my opinion maybe others have experienced same. Actually fairly inexpensive stuff.

Definitely try the tea, those organisms can do all kinds of wonders for the roots and with your temps it would help. My temps used to be similar to yours but I bought a chiller and never looked back. If it's in your budget I would recommend. Try out the tea first though you may not even need a chiller. Let us know what happens!

Ok, so it is now 24 hours after using the tea and my roots look way worse than before. I only had a very little spot of brown on my roots to begin with. Now I have what looks like a big glob of brown mush on my roots. I followed Heisenberg's directions to the T, so I am not sure what is happening. From a brown spot half the size of a dime, to brown goop the size of a bic lighter. What could I have possibly done wrong?

What you are seeing may be afterslime which is harmless. What you need to do is keep up with the tea and monitor your plants. As long as they look healthy you are on the right track. Also, make sure you are not adding too much molasses or if you are brewing in a cold room you must brew for a longer period of time. Keep us updated! :) Pics would help also. Oh and keep your res aerated as much as possible. Popping action on the surface all around!

I'm on page 38. This is a big ass thread. I would like to say it works.

Old roots are making new white roots shoot out sideways. Some plants are growing new roots and some plants, their roots became white.

Used:
Earthworm casting (couple handful)
Hydroguard (splash)
ZHO (1 scoop of the big side)
Pancake syrup (splash)
in a 30 gallon trash can.

Bubbled, brew or whatever you call it. Took a week to fix. My roots were bad. I did not clean my reservior. I just kept adding everyday to my plants.

Reservior much cleaner but more dirt in there now. I see gray gunk on my roots but i know that's from the fungus.

George book shows that fisurism and pythium can be fought by natural bacteria like bacillus and theraderma and stuff. Too lazy to post it up.

Conclusion: it works nigga!

Oh yeah, temp of my res is warm like mid 70s for sure...and it's still growing roots. Temp in my grow is like 90 and it still works. It's like growing in soil but you're not....mind blown.

I'm wondering if botanicare's cns17 line can potentially trigger or feed anaerobic bacteria.

From their website:

"Q: What causes CNS17 to have it’s unique appearance and consistency?
A:
The technology used in the formulation CNS17 utilizes polysaccharides (simple sugars) as part of the suspension method that prevents certain elemental macro and micro nutrients such as calcium, phosphates, and sulfates from bonding together and precipitating out of solution while in a highly concentrated state. This is what allows CNS17 to deliver all of essential plant nutrients in just a single bottle.

Once diluted into solution these simple sugars cleanly dissolve and provide an energy source for beneficial microbes."

Could this be enough to interfere with any rot treatment?

ya know....heisenburg has warned many times not to add any molasses (for tea) directly to the res.....because the molasses feeds the slime......and taking YOUR quote directly Botanicares website it stands to reason that anything that feeds the "good" bacteria can also feed the "bad" bacteria.....now you got me thinking....good catch...my guess would be yes....but that is only a guess....Im sure other factors must be included....

I've controlled for almost everything. I've used tea, aquashield, got temps down, switched to r/o water, and I always get rot when letting the girls go swimming.

The only thing I haven't tried (other than sterile) is switching nute lines. I assumed there was never anything going into my res other than bennies. Finding out there are sugars in that nute line is pretty frustrating.

I may try dwc again with general hydroponics flora series (assuming it doesn't contain anything organic) to see if that solves the issue.
