Coming to a School near you, passwords made meaningless

...this week Illinois parents began receiving a letter from school authorities informing them that their children's social media passwords may now have to be handed over, as part of school discipline. Motherboard reports that it obtained one of these letters. It reads, in part:School authorities may require a student or his or her parent/guardian to provide a password or other related account information in order to gain access to his/her account or profile on a social networking website if school authorities have reasonable cause to believe that a student's account on a social networking site contains evidence that a student has violated a school disciplinary rule or procedure.

You might imagine that this stipulation only applies to school computers and activity on school premises. It does not. The schools may ask for passwords and search on the basis of any posting by a student at any time and in any place.

If you haven't figured out that Facebook is used by employers to fire people, then you haven't been paying attention. Facebook makes Identity theft just that much easier. Someone can read your page and figure out your spending habits, then steal your CC and go to town making purchases that would not set off any alarms.

You just drive it underground. I mean I already have 3 fake Facebook identities for let's say...various purposes. I mean if I can think of it.....

The thing is, schools are hardly public services like that. We, homeowners pay thru the nose for schools, kids or no.

They got her friend to give up his Facebook credentials just by telling him they would get a search warrant if he didn't.

The school liason police officer is doing this.

Reasonable cause can be false. There is more privacy on the page than what they seek. Passwords can be taken home or even sold. Over what major rule would this be required to happen ?

Any asshole can make up a law. Let's see how well it does in a civil rights lawsuit. I'm betting not so well...
