Making shatter smell/taste better? + Questions w/ technique

Hello guys, I am fairly new at making my own BHO. I've only done 4 runs to date - all of which have been great quality but they all lack taste/smell. Here is the equipment I use.

I start off by dehydrating my product at ~110 for a couple hours.


I use four coffee filters with a hose clamp

I blast it into a pyrex dish using 1 300ml can/ounce. Then I transfer the dish over to my skillet for a water bath. ** is the SKILLET suppose to be at temp of 100-120 or is the WAX suppose to be at that temp? **

I then transfer it over to my Vac chamber that's sitting on a presto

After a couple hours pulling at vull vacum and heat this is my final product.

There is no smell and it taste like burnt rubber in a sense.


I am trying to obtain a glassy shatter and i got a stringy/hard shatter like consistency. Any tips? Thanks.

frozen wet for maximum terpenes but not maximum yield.. i ran frozen wet.. and ran 100 grams and only yielded 7 grams.. then.. i took the shit out.. dried it for about a week.. and then grinded it up.. and ran it again.. and got another 10 grams of still Very good potent.. and it still smelt fine.. i ran.. full nugs.. and ran 100 grams.. and got 14 grams.. and then ran 100 grams grinded up.. and got 20 grams. i also tried 95 grams of nugs.. and 20 grams of kief and i got 31 grams ... tried the just kief soak in butane.. and kief from nugs with a quick screening with mainly trich heads yielded 70% weight.. did 50 grams and got 35 back.. and then did kief from trim.. and did 50 grams and got 19 back.. tried sfv og kush.. 28 grams.. and got 6.5 back.. and dinafem diesel 28 grams got 6.1 grams back... ak47 cherry pheno 28 grams got 6.9 grams back.. and dinafem cheese got 6.2 back from 28grams.. ecsd 28 grams got me 7.2 grams .. and original haze 28grams got back 6 grams even.. but was super light in color and had this very sweet like candy lemony smell to it and the high was some of the best ive had in a long time..

yield wise.. u need to atleast dry it.. if u want max yield decarb it.. but u will get a more Sappy product.. and.. if u want mainly taste and smell i think the best time to do it is.. literally after like 5-8 days were the outsides are atleast pretty dry to the touch for best smell to yield and taste.. but with a strain taken to full maturity. an grown properly a nice dry and cured a week or 2 comes out AMAZING.

but try it out yourself.. we grabbed 8 tubes in the begining.. 3 tubes remain.. 2 14 inchers and 1 stainless steal turkey baster.. 3 glass 28gram tubes actually got a good 10-15 runs on them.. and then cracked and got tossed in the trash... and 1 tube i broke during the first pack.. cracked and broke .. pissed me off. and a stainless steel turkey baster which works great im going to buy a bunch of them for single strain headsmoke runs.. . but hey.. watchout for ebay.. some of the dudes on there are selling thin ass glass that will break if u pack them to hard.. or if they get hot and then cold. or go from very cold to warm.. its not fun... i got my moneys worth.. but i had to be extra careful.. and not to mention.. after i bought them.. people started making the ones with can holders.. and a place in the glass were u could hold it without a glove and u wouldnt get frost bite.. and then the stands so u didnt have to hold anything.. and then the double lips.. and the big single lips so u dont blow them out.. but wen i got the small ones they were just tiny glass tubes with a hole in 1 end.. and barely any lip at the end to hold the filters on there.. they sucked compared to wats out there now..

Doesnt the dehyrdation process bring out the color though? does that kill the taste/smell? What do you mean run frozen wet?
Dehydrating only evaporates the lighter terpenes.

Trust me, do a run w/o the fast dry and your flavor will be greatly improved.

Note: garbage in, garbage out. If it doesn't smell good to start with the material won't make tasty extracts.

I will try a run without the dehydrator and let you know, thanks.
These nugs smelled VERY SOUR - not garbage. When in the water bath is the skillet suppose to be at ~100-130 or is the wax suppose to be at the temperature? And you disagree with applying heat in the vacuum purge with the griddle?

it sounds like from jointoperation's post that if you freeze fresher tasty smelling nugs you will get a lower yield, but more taste and flavor, but if you dry your stuff out even if its tasty to begin with, you'll get a higher yield but less flavor. If i was going to be selling stuff i'd run dryer, or for myself fresher for the taste, but in future for myself i'll probably be winterizing for the most purity, and if so i guess taste is already removed from that so dryer would be better for more yield

yield is the same though technically fresh frozen yields more. drying just lowers weight of the plant material improving the ratio
slower you dry your herb the better. slower you purge the better..
fresh frozen retains more yummies that will likely evaporate along with water of a similar boiling point that's in much higher conconcentrations

I am still purging a small batch that I did yesterday without running my material through a dehyrdator. So far; the taste has improved significantly while the smell a little bit. It has been under full vacuum for almost 24 hours now (no heat vacuum purge).

What's the difference between applying heat during your vacuum purge and not?

we just dont use anything with a low terpene profile for bho .. i say.. try both.. and see what u like better.. most oil or even flowers.. should be grown to your liking.. if your going to put the work in to grow it . and smoke it .. u mite as well grow shit the way you like it..

What am I doing wrong?
I am trying to produce shatter.

My procedure: blast onto pyrex dish, water bath temp up to 130 oil temp up to 120 for 15 minutes, put into vac it chamber and pull full vac while applying heat, griddle - 175, dish - 136, chamber 112, oil round 100, after 10 hours in the purge i took it out there was no reaction no bubbles.


This is my final product I am left with, what am I not doing?
