Default semi-semi hydro w/ lava rocks
i haven't grown in a few years but i just wanted to get this idea out there.
it is basically a very simple semi hydro method i thought of during my last indoor grow project. it involves layering the airy red lava rocks you can get from the lawn and garden section of your local mart between potting soil mix. it seemed to work fantastically for me. the plants took off like lou ferrigno with the speed of ben johnson. the basic idea is the lava rocks will draw up water and goodies to the roots from the dirt through capilary action and allow the roots to get air and beefyness. the dirt is there to make waterings less often and allow you to water them from the top like reg soil. I used about 12'' pots and ended up having to water about twice a day and the pots dried out nicely/dry between waterings. I used chemical-johnsons' plant food as it was all i had available at the time and i did not feed every watering as i thought the dirt would retain some of the residual plant food. I did water them enough to have a bit of descent run off but not always/ like every few days. as i was worried about chemical build up. i never got to bud the plants as my roommates stupidity was rampant at the time. i would appreciate any insight to this as i am thinking of trying it again next time i grow. and attached is a drawing of as closely as i remember how i layerd the pots.

Hi Fred....

your medium (semi hydro) is a ver solid method of growing.... I would recommend a perlite/soil mix.. but if you prefer hydroton clay pellets.. then go for it..

Both methods offer GREAT root Aeration and reduce the chance of over watering to almost ZERO!!!!!

For NEW growers especially.. having lots of inert rock in the soil is SMART.. it allows for ease of flushing as well of reducing the chance of loving your plants to death (overwatering)

cheers
