I dont know about your weather as to what part of n.z you are from ,but because i bring my plants up indoors i usually harvest early ,as i have put them through the veg period ,and let the m flower a couple of weeks so when they do go outside they think fuck it is time to keep flowering as the hours are still short ,as in spring time ,i find once they have started flowering for a few eeks they dont revert to veg as the hours are still short.
but natural grown plants i normally plant in august or september ,and they are ready in may ,but i grow mainly sativa strains ,so they take longer ,i have smoked some good kiwi buds ,so good luck , it is some of the best smoke i have tried, dont know what strain ,but fucking nice.

It also depends how big you want them to grow.
When I was in Sydney which is pretty close climate wise to NZ north island,
I would sometimes plant in december or early january coz I didn't want them growing so tall that the neighbours would see them and I would still end up with 5' or 6' plants.
But if you want huge plants then spring is the go, as soon as the cold nights are gone.
Hope this helps.
