Okay, so when I build my box I will need to compensate for having the space for the filter INSIDE the box?

I think I understand now. I will post a diagram and ask if i have it right

in diagram A the fan is trying to push air through the carbon filter

Pushing is always less effective than pulling.

Only in really small boxes is pushing needed because you cant fit you CF in the box.

But if you can fit it, do it.
