so ive read around here and check the faq but all i could find is 14-24 inches from the light. but thats pretty wide open there.... anyone willing to offer advice. and im aware of the whole hand thing, placing it over the top of the plant. but i wanted to see if anyone had better results with one distance to another??

THanks

it will depend way more on the type of light you use vs cycle the plant is grown in.

Cool lights like floro's can get almost touching the plant (3-5 inches) with no probs but if you did that with a 1000w HPS I think you'd have smoke a little early due to the temp of the bulb. This is why they have fixtures with fan inlet's and exhaust, so that you can try to keep the temp of the bulb at a temp that allows you to have the light as close as possible.

You want the lights as close to the plant(s) as possible. Temps is the limiting factor. Put your hand on the tops of your plants. Keep it there for 2 or 3 minutes, if feels comfy, you are good on height. If it burns/hurts, your too close. (just a rule of thumb. If you can, get a temp probe and measure for sure and not an infrared laster temp, they are rather sketchy)

i notice that your time is at 89. where is the censor for the thermometer at it should be at the top of the plant so you know what they are feeling. the temp will vary from the floor to the celling

ahhh very good point, i never thought of that. i have controled the temp better now, ive been around 81... but i am going to lower it tonight so its below the light and right around the height of the plants.

Thanks
