How well do ozone generators actually work?

are they a worthwhile replacement to a carbon fliter?

Also is there anything I'd have to replace once I bought it?

No it wont work the best,you just need to use common sense & plan ahead,no carbon filter can even come close to dealing with smell as effectively as ozone generators.

The commercial application of ozone generators is fire restoration,when a building catches fire it stinks like a mofo for years,fire restoration company's get the building then shock treat the entire building with ozone,it neautralizes the smell permantly & pulls the smell from things that smell normally soaks into like wood,carpet & furniture.

Simply setting a ozone generator inside your grow room is not the proper application of the device,in high doses ozone can & will burn the hell out of the plants,it will seriously stunt growth & suck any smell from the bud.

There are several ways to properly use ozone generators & several different models.

The best method is to set the room up with powered exhaust that leaves the building through a chimney or such & a passive air intake,then install an inline ozone generator outside the grow op,this way the air being pulled from the room via exhaust is ran through the generator before being exhausted up the chimney,this is the prefered method for in home grow op's,high levels of ozone are very bad for plant & human life.

The other method i know is the one that pulls fresh air into the grow op from outside the bldg then exhausts stale air directly back into the building via the bldgs heating ducts,a ozone generator then treats the stinky air & fans circulate the ozone around the building,this method is better for keeping a even temp throught the entire building to aid in avoiding infra red detection but should not be used in a living enviroment.

As for maintanince of generators,there are 2 types of generators & both types require maintainance,the corona discharge(static electric driven) units require cleaning of the plates,the other type which is UV (Light activated) can be ran with ozone bulbs or sterilizer bulbs which will need replacing,if your in a high humidity situation then the uv type generators will produce more ozone per hour over static discharge type generators.

If done right an ozone generator will blow away the performance of any carbon filter,stay away from hydro shop generators & buy factory direct from ebay.
