5.0 volt charger for pc fan?

will a 5volt charger work with a pc fan? or do i need a higher volt charger? if so what volt do i need? and were can u get phone chargers cheaper then $20.

yea i heard of someone posting up saying use a 12v DC charger and it will work any case fan basically... i work at a cell store luckily

so i get these free

but for some reason when i heard that and checked today, all our cell phone chargers were only 5v... one phone charger was at most 5.3v or somethin like that.... but i bought the fan already so i tried it out.... who knew! it works

i had a pretty big Antec fan 120mm i believe and it works... but i wonder if its at the speed it should b at... that i am not sure... i think it wont b as fast as it should b with the 5v power only... but itll work....

thanks for your reply man,it helped me,and i tripped out my self as i looked at all my old chargers and they all said 5v thought i was gonna have to buy a new one lol

lol, if you find a higher Voltage DC charger... (mayb off a camcorder charger or camera charger) then you could power up that 12v fan more, also if you want littler fans, there are 5v cpu fans out there.

Volts is only 12 the equation. Amps play a part in it. If you use 1/2 the voltage, you will need twice the amps.

I've seen people wire up a fan for 7.5volts. But I'm not a fan of it.

ya amps is the big thing. i have about a dozen chargers and the only one that would even spin the fans was 4.5v and 500mA

I bought a power supply on ebay 12v 1A $6 shipped, works great! I run 2 120mm fans and one 80mm fan off it

For some CPU fans 5 V will make it run but not at full speed. I didn't want to sacrifice any of my chargers so I actually bought a DC adapter with selectable voltage from Walmart. It was less than $20 so not too bad, and it lets me select from 3V to 12 V (a few discreet settings - not continuous) which is nice because on cool days I run it at 7.5 V to keep the things really quiet, but on warmer days I can crank it up to the full 12 V
