ok, so my ideal set up would be to set up a grow-box/closet to grow about 5-10 plants at any given time. i don't want to half-ass it but also don't want to spend that much money. my questions are, how much would this cost, does anyone else grow just for personal use (and if so, what's your set up like), and is this actually possible?

5-10 plant and not 1/2 assed? Gonna cost.

you can get by pretty cheap if you play your cards right. If cost is a factor then you're going to go soil.

You're looking around $100 for nutes if this is going to be a long grow (roughly). You can get pots really cheap, its 1 gallon size per foot.

If you keep your eye out on craigslist or ebay you can find cheap MH, HPS or conversion lights. If you want and heat is a problem you can always veg with CFL's and even flower with CFL's. Flowering that many plants is kind of a waste of money as you can buy a mh or HPs and spend probably less money in the long run.

You can vent with PC fans or you can buy the bigger better types of fans. Read the growFAQ about ventiliation and ways you can do it.

Nutes, I'd recommend Tigerbloom for soil, though never have used it but I've read nothing but good things about it!

All in all I'd say look at spending $400-600 if you play your cards right, for a good, succesful grow. Look at it at an Ounce of some really good to grow your own shit! Perfect investment!

the way i figure it, spending anywhere up to $1000 as an initial investment would be worth not having to buy ever again, or at the very least rarely. plus right now i can normally only afford high mids, so i'd be looking to get some really nice stuff growing. if i smoke about 1-2 ounces a month, how many plants would i want? how many ounces per plant (estimate)? how many plants would i want? and how much space would i need?

At $1K, yo can get a killer set up. but be carefully you don't buy big stuff for a small space.

I'm fuzzy on yields, but a Z per plant shouldn't be a prob (correct me if I'm wrong)

i'm also worried about detection...how substantial would security risk be with a set up like that? would i need to worry enough to take serious measures to hide what i'm doing from thermal imaging, etc.?

Find an inside room/closet with no outside wall, and you should be fine.

Apt? house? own? Rent? All plays in, as does the 'hood.

no need to make an effort to reduce electrical bill/thermal radiation with a crop that size?

Just cover up light leaks, and dont worry about electric bill... sounds like you only need a 400 or 600 watt

a 400w hps can do 5 plants no problem if they are small sized. You can do a 600 also and as long as its ventilated well you don't have to worry about it picking up on thermal. Technically they can't used infared on you w/o a warrant, but they still do it anyways.
