Thank you for contacting me about decriminalizing the possession of marijuana. I appreciate your feedback on this issue. I have long been an advocate for the legal use marijuana for medical purposes when prescribed by a doctor.

Chairman Barney Frank has introduced a bill that would eliminate most of the federal penalties for possession and personal use of marijuana. This bill, H.R. 5843, has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. I will keep your thoughts in mind regarding the decriminalization of marijuana for recreational use and carefully consider actions that Congress can take to make our nation's drug laws both fair and effective.
