150w MH or 250w would be better. and get a HPS bulb for flowering.

the cfl will work just as well, and will help prevent excessive heat.

actually, I saved wattage and had less heat using my 250 hps. I had cfls before and my room was hot as hell.....

Indeed,

The Way I understand it heat has more to do with light efficency, Big MH/HPS bulbs are hot but that is beacuse they are also 400/600/1000 Watts and put out loads of light.

In regards to that 125W CFL I just got one, i'm using it for sprouting seeds and I will keep my mouther in under it later. It is a good light, I really like it, but for actual growing I would go with a HID.

Try and get a switchable balest, that way you can use the same Ballest for MH and HPS, I have a 400w one and it works great.

This addvace may not work for you, but I hope it helps.

PS if you go with CFLs spend the extra and get the 200Watters

I agree, if you want to choose between a 125w cfl and 150w mh, then i would definately opt for the cfl. If you intend to flower under the same bulb, then its worth considering either a 250 w cfl or a 250 w HPS.

its not the same.....a 250w cfl only puts out 8700 lumens...my 250 hps puts out 33000.......

Without starting another thread, its not all about lumens. I agree that the HPS will put out a lot more lumens, but the HPS is only 35% efficient.

It uses nearly 20% of the wattage to create heat.

Also i think 8700 lumens sounds a bit stingy for 250w of cfl

I have a 125 w envirolite CFL that puts out nearly 12,000 lumens and more importantly is 100% par.

haha......its all about lumens. What you care about is light...more specifically, light energy. That's what plants use during photosynthesis/growth. Light is measured in lumens.

HPS is more efficient. A typical 250 watt HPS bulb/unit will produce about 27,000 lumens.

23w CFL = 1600 lumens = 69.6 lumens/watt
30w CFL = 2000 lumens = 66.7 lumens/watt
40w CFL = 2600 lumens = 66.3 lumens/watt

compared to

150w HPS = 14000 lumens = 93.3 lumens/watt
250w HPS = 28000 lumens = 112 lumens/watt
400w HPS = 50000 lumens = 125 lumens/watt
600w HPS = 90000 lumens = 150 lumens/watt

lol... i did say without starting another thread...

Lumens is a measure of the human eyes perception of brightness.

Plants dont see the same spectrum, so lumens is only half the story.

A great place to learn more about what is important to growers.

Envirolites indoor hydroponic envirolite grow lights, grow cabinets and reflectors.

And what CFL figures are those. ?

I Have a 58 w T5 that puts out 5,800 lumens and thats a standard fluroescent, producing 100 lumens per watt in the correct spectrum.
