Just like the title says, I was wondering what is better. For example, 400w of hps spread out between 2 or 3 lights, or a single 400w light?
The reason I ask is that right now I use a 150w hps light with a bunch of cfls, and I have a local hydro shop selling this weird 270w hydrofarm hps light for cheap, its used.
And so I was trying to decide if I should get that and add it, or just save up a little more and get a 400 watt.

Also, has anyone heard of a 270 watt hps light? It seems weird to me, never seen that wattage.

It all depends on how big your room is and how many plants you want to grow.
1 400w hps will bud like 10-14 decent plants!!

I am growing in my closet right now.
But currently I am only using the top 3 feet or so, above where I hang my shirts.
I rearranged my room so I am going to be able to use the entire closet now.
Its about 4-5' x 3' x 10'?
I was planning on leaving the top 3 feet for vegging, and then the bottom 6 feet for flowering so I can get some bigger plants.
Right now I am just topping and LST'ing the shit out of my plants to keep them low.

The best thing for you to do would be to save up for a 600 hps. They are the most efficient by far. As far as lumens per watt goes, the 600 produces around 100000 lumens vs a 400 that will produce maybe 50000 lumens. 1000 watt hps will only produce about 130000 lumens so you can see how the ratio is most favorable to the 600. The more light the more bud....so if you dont mind energy bills you should put as much light in there as possible.

Never heard of the 270 watt light ever before. A 400 watt light is better then smaller 150 watt hps or any kind of cfl light. You can get a new digital switchable 600 watt ballast for $119 at Maryland Hydroponics I have used thier for over a year now and will be ordering a few more in a month or so. The 3 I have are awesome. They are overclocked so they actually output equal to 640 watts each and use about 25% less electricity as the old magnetic ballasts and are only 4 lb instead of like 30 and they are silent no hum and are instant on

Yeah, I kind of do care about the energy bill, I have to pay whatever the extra charges are to my roommates.
I was thinking though if I could use my 150, and get the 250 (270) and that would be as good as a 400 I would just do that instead of paying even more for a 400.
Also, I could maneuver the lights into the best lighting positions, maybe do like a / \ with a light angled on each side.

So, it doesn't make a difference if you use a lot of small lights, besides efficiency?

I buy from ebay,marylandhydroponics.com insidesun.com and wormsway.com for my stuff online..I get 400 watt used light on ebay for about $40 delivered 1000 watters are about$75 delivered...Figure a 1000 watt light will run $65 a month if on 24 hours a day a 600 watter about $50 and a 400 watt light about $35 a month if on 24 hours

I'm going to try and look around and see if I can find a deal on a 400w system.
If I can find one under 200 or so I will go with that, if not Ill just add the 250w light to my system.
