ideally you want it to run 24/7 - that way you can ensure that you will have almost total odour control.
if you have noise problems then you can do three things:
1) make a DIY accoustic box to place the fan in
2) buy an accoustic fan - although expensive new, can get them on ebay for $60-100
3) buy a "dimmer switch" adaptor to plug the inline fan into - that way you can turn down the speed the fan runs at, reducing noise levels significantly, and allowing you to run it continually - or continuously(can never remember difference!lol). For example, if you turn down the power to half, the noise reduction is significantly greater than half.
personally would try third option first, as it is cheapest and gives surprising results. Got mine off of ebay for $6.
