Though this guy sounds like a douche I have to say that it all depends on the quality of the malana. I've spent about a year in total living in India (spread over a few years since I went first in 1999) and I smoke nothing but charas every time. The problem I've found is that since middle-class Indians have now started to smoke quite a bit, finding decent quality hash has become very difficult. Bangalore is one place where I know for a fact that finding good hash can be tricky.
I tend to buy it from western people I know well who have spent time in the mountains buying up good quality chunks for the winter beach season. When it's good, it's smooth and sweet...when it isn't great, well....then it's nasty. But that's true of all hash.
As I said before, the very best hash I've had was from parvati, and was so sweet that I had people from all over hanging around to get a drag or two off my joints...better even than the best rifman hash you get from DampKring coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
I personally think that the average hash quality has suffered because there's so much demand that there isn't enough good stuff around, and certainly less curing time on the mass-produced shit. (the best hand-rubbed charas is buried for several months to cure)
Of course, this is actually all the more reason to grow your own proper bud. Rather than waiting around for the odd tolah of decent charas that might appear...grow your own and do the job right yourself...
Shanti
