    Default When to transplant?

Wondering when I should transplant these seedlings out of these two-inch pots and into the 9-inch, 2 gallons I have for them. Do these look big enough to transplant? Let me know, thanks!

Is there a general rule for transplanting?

I would keep them in those for another few weeks. There is lots of room yet. When they double the size they are now, transplant them.

increase pot size when the plant becomes rootbound in its old pot. Rootbound-when the roots have grown enough to hold the soil together when removed from the pot, usually when roots can be seen growing out of the pot in profusion.

better to transplant to a smaller pot than one that is unnecessarily big. From a 2 inch pot you might want to first "pot up" to a 1/2 gallon pot and then a 2 gallon pot. This allows the soil to dry faster between waterings.

What about transplant shock? Wouldn't it be better for the plant to just transplant them once rather than twice?

Should be no shock unless you are digging them up. Water well, both pots, before transplanting. Do it in relative darkness, although not necessary. All will be well.
