Anyone here consider the idea of "Terroir" as it pertains to Marijuana?

The French use the term Terroir, loosely translated to "sense of place" when talking about wine. Its kind of a culmination of things, assessing the entire environment in which a plant is grown, the positives, negatives, and the likely results it will produce.

We all do this to some extent as growers, but the idea has not been embraced like it has in the winery business. Familiar with the idea, and thoughts on it?

Very familiar with the phrase, I recently done a wine course taking me up to Swen1 level (it's like a martial art, hahaha) I also think the taste wheel is something else that can be applied to MJ as well as grapes. grapes encompass many of the same chemicals and genetics (around 2000 seperate tastes) that all the smells and tastes associated with the common descriptions (i,e blackcurrants, fruity, woody, chemical, earthy, bitter, sweets,) without starting on tannins that is.

Terroir is very important and as we know there are specific longditude and lattitudes where wine is traditionally grown. CLimate change is also effecting this and has been shown recently with an English Sparkling Wine producer winning the title of best Sparkling wine (a prize normally reserved for the Champagne region) However, the climate in certain parts of the south of england is now also suitable for this.

So yes, Terroir (indoors and outdoors is everything imo)

Nice topic!!!

Peace,

Thats wonderful to see people here with that kind of knowledge and insight, thanks for the input DST. Terroir is one of those elements of wine that I think a lot of casual drinkers shake their head at. It appears to be this mystic barrier between the drinker and the glass, something intangible yet quantifiable. Its no wonder that people assume this is just another pretentious element of the wine world.

I wonder, has anyone here ever heard other growers talk about how their outdoor grow area outperforms others with certain types of weed. Like someone saying, 'these rocky hills and high rainfall contribute to the best ____ indica you've ever seen' much like a wine connoisseur may say about the Russian River Valley and its incredible Pinot Noirs....
