When the sun goes down at night, the plant releases it's sugars and starches and allows gravity to pull those back down to the roots, where they roots will utilize them during the night. If you chop your bud before the 'sun' comes up, you avoid having to cure out those sugars and starches and the harshness they bring to our smoke. This is something I just read in a 2008 High Times Harvest guide. Thoughts?
I thought this was common knowledge on these forums, along with an extended dark period before you chop. Mine get 48 - 72 hours of darkness before I chop. I cut the plant's main stalk and hang the entire plant to dry (right back into the same darkness), fan leaves and all, for ~5 days until they are ready to jar. Hanging the plant whole to dry is supposed to help speed/aid the fermentation process and slow down the drying process a bit, which is good for my low humidity basement.

Darkness before harvest is not a myth. The only issues with it is that it doesn't work with all strains (mostly only whites I believe) and should only be done for up to 48 hours. It probably works with fewer strains than it doesn't and so it might not be worth it for most anyone that doesn't know exactly what strains it works with.

I operate a F&D lava rock/clay gravel hydro system. I run ferts all the time in my system. When I chop my plants down I vase them for the last twenty-four hours in RO water. I remove them as the light is coming on and it is very important that the plants do not go dry during this period. This process will leave your pot tasting like candy and brings out the nice sweet smell of good pot. I have a trough in my budding room for this that has an upper res and a float switch and an electronic valve to keep the trough topped up. I use a lot of wash machine parts in my grow-op to get things done as I'm far to unreliable, especially after smoking a big gagger. I would never put my pot out without doing this.
