I have a 400w HPS can I leave the ballast on my rug, I took it outta my closet to reduce temp a little and I cant think of what to set it on so will it be fine?

hi there youngmoney420, i think you should find something wood or metal to sit it on, because if its like my ballast they get very hot and the last thing you want is to start a fire on your rug.

You can have small fan blowing over ballast to reduce heat further ,after mounting on fireproof stand like 02hustla suggested.

Do you guys run digitial???

Older type ballast, they tend to run hot if not ventilated. They can get too hot with no air circulation. I run small fan over ballast to reduce heat during operating hours . They're heavyweights regardless of wattage.

mine aint the digi type either and it gets really hot, its mounted outside the growroom so its not adding to the temps in there. i never thought about adding a fan to the ballast to keep it cooler but i will. thanx bud shaman for that idea.

Ballast was getting to hot to handle, needed gloves to touch it. With small fan it barely feels warm. I think it helps the ballast to run more efficiently too.

i never not run a fan on my ballast...i used both

If its an old magnetic ballast just place like a over glove under it to just make sure it doesnt burn nylon carpet as they can get hot. All my digital ballast have built in fans that suck air in and then out the other end.Temp is about 55 degrees F at max
