So basically it boils down to if I use a reflector or not, or at least which type of reflector?

yeah, well..... sort of.. you could always turnthe reflector VERTICAL and have it along the HEIGHT of the plant...

the most efficient use of a bulb would be surrounded by the plant 360 degrees...go from there...with cfl's it's easy, with hps/mh it requires a screen to keep plants at the cool-enuf distance...
