The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world. Yes that's right the country that was built on the Constitution and The Bill of Rights. The land of the Free also can boast that about 50% of all federal inmates are in for...yep you guessed it drugs. So yes the rights and freedoms we are granted has earned us a huge drug war with many real non violent offenders making up half our prison population, and more users are injured or killed by enforcement than the actual drugs themselves. Nice protection our gov't has given us from drugs, huh? No wonder the rest of the world thinks we are jackasses, just look at our system.... we can shoot a burglar and get sued or even arrested for it, so even violent offenders have more rights than drug offenders, and what is that saying?

Our gov't also has decided it now has the right to tell us what we can and can not put in our body....somebodies gotten a little power hungry and corrupted...also the major lobbyists of the drug wars are, or rather the biggest contributors to the drug war are
1. alcohol companies-afraid of losing customers for some odd reason
2. pharma companies- can't patent MJ, so they wouldn't even be able to do anything really
3 synthetics companies-hemp anyone
4. and the underground-huge losses of money, career changes

A little off topic but stoners aren't political or motivated enough to do anything so I would put all of us at #5 on the list. I read that if every regular user donated their bag money for just one week that there would be enough funds to try and create and pass drug laws just like Cali's Prop. 215...I think it was 215, someone who knows could help me out here.

Great post Gygax! I've said for years that the police need marijuana; it's their "boogeyman". When they need more money, new patrol cars, more policemen, the latest in super snooping equipment, all they need to do is scream that there are drug-crazed potheads on the loose, out there sniffing pot, raping and pillaging, and they get all the money they want, police powers that the framers of the constitution never intended them to have and the ability to do just about any damn thing they want - under color of law - with impunity. Need to kill someone? Cap his ass and stuff a bag of pot in his pants. Need a million dollar helicopter? Grow a small patch of marijunana on the sheriff's property, have the heros come in and make a media event out of it and put "huge pot farm found at undisclosed location" in the newspapers and the money for that shiney new heli will be in the next budget. It's the best damn thing to ever happen to the po po.

marijuana used to be referred to only as hemp until the government funded a propaganda campaign early in the century which succeeded in rebranding it as marijuana (how it was referred to in mexico) and stemming the flow of immigrants from south of the border. Also, do you really think that it's a coincidence that we are turning our prisons over to private FOR PROFIT companies who are using inmates generate over a billion dollars a year in goods? Do you think it's a coincidence that there is lower pot use per capita among white people when it was white theatres that were playing that shit propaganda and that our prisons are filled with minorities for stupid ass drug charges? It's all bullshit. We live in the land of the fees my friends.

the reason why the us has the most people in jail is because its a business. With everyday a person spends time in jail the government is being paid for that person being in jail.

Real sad thing is look at what it costs to house these prisoners, then take that money and see how much it woulf help children in school, yeah the kids in our crappy education system now. One person in jail costs us what maybe 5 kids need to get a good education. Not sure if that makes sense but we spend more money on a single prisoner a year then we do on an underpriviledged child, the ones who can't afford lunch, or a school uniform, or certain districts that get no funding and the poor kids never get a shot. And yes it is a business, just trying to put it in perspective with what could be fixed instead. I know we got off subject but it's an interesting topic.
