you shouldnt have algae on your soil if it has been drying out properly... is it really really humid in there as well or something? i would agree though that its probly some sort of creature eating it while you are asleep... better check under your bed and in your closet before you go to sleep!!

Easy fix. Transplant and make sure that fucked up skin is covered in dirt. new roots will develop easily. and set up a few glue traps around your plant!
