How does someone tell the difference between the two?
Also, how old do they have to be for you to be able tell?

well heres a list of the differences...sativas have thinner leafs are taller buds arent as compact an the high is more energitic....indis are short thick stemmed wide leafed tight bud with a more narcotic stone....peace

Generally, Sativas are long and kind of Lanky with thin leafs, while the indica is usually squat and wide leafs. Most if not all strains now adays are a mix..So it gets abit confusing of what is what, but that would be a general guide line. Also indicas finish up there bloom faster then sativa's, so if a plant is finishing up @ 45 days then it is surly a indica dominate plant...I hope this helps..
