Default Can roots be exposed to light?
In my baby bloomer ebb N Flow system, i have 6 6" plastic net pots. the pots are filled with hydroton. As of now i dont have hydroton surrounding the pots. i am starting to be able to see the roots coming out towards the sides of the pots and coming out the bottom of the pots. Since i can see them, i know the light can get to them. Is the light getting to them a bad thing??? Do i need to surround each pot with hydroton?? Do they make some kind of cover for Baby Bloomers so that only the top of hydroton and plants are exposed to light???

ideally you don't want any light to hit the roots

Hey, i have recently talked to a few local growers and seen there set up. they have an Ebb and Flow system, that holds about 25 plants. They have roots exposed all over the place. the pots are sitting on top of roots and the light is obviously getting to some of these roots. There plants are in great condition. The only thing he recommended was that i use HYGROZYME. Not just because of the light, but its a great root protector.

Please if anyone has any more comments regarding lights and root exposure, please let me know. Thank you!

I just started using hygrowzyme, about 3 days ago. I dont know if its just coincidence, but my roots are looking phenomenal. I have noticed an incredible increase in roots hairs. Im still hoping that the light wont hurt them. I will definetly let everyone know how the light reacts to the roots. Please, if someone knows exactly what will happen to roots exposed to light, i need to know. I dont want a answer from a book, or hear say. I want someone who has actually grown and had some roots exposed to light.

if the roots start looking more green than white they are being effected by the light, the roots will start growing like normal plant material if light hits them, then they wont absorb foods as well.

Roots need to live in the dark but brief periods of light won't be a danger like it is in the dark period of flowering. The greater danger of light is algae growth.

i'm in soil but growing in clear(ish) pots, 30 ltr each, the plants have reached the sides, about 3 weeks ago actually and ive had no problems, plants are growing well.

difference is in soil about 90% of the roots are away fromthe sides so the problem isnt as bad for me.
