How Far should i keep my 650 watt hps light from my plants? im starting them from seed and have never done an indoor operation alone

Put your hand, palm up, next to the top of the plant. If it's much too hot, it's over 45C, so the light is too close. If it feels comfortably warm, you're ok with the lights.
