Default root growth space (better long or wide)
would it be better for roots to be able to grow long or wide???

i read a lot of people threads and alot of people use dif. size and shape containers. but i see some use 16oz cups and they get the same results as the 1gal pots. the only down side to useing the 1g pots would be space i could pack more 16oz cups in a 4x4 room then 1g pots, but if the roots would perfer a longer space i could replace the cups with 1/2 gal milk con. they are about as wide as a 16oz cup but are longer

the reason i am asking is ive seen alot of root pics of hydro setups and it looks like the roots perfer to grow long not wide - i hear a lot of grower say get 3-5 gal pots and youll do better on yeild, but when i look at 3-5 gal pots there are mostly wide not long (deep) - and i feel as though roots like space, but the space they would perfer is long and deep not wide like most of the current pots are- to me roots like growing down and only grow wide if there is no more down to go, kind of like veg growth in reverse, but i could be wrong (ive cut the roots on a plant growing in hydro, and this made more roots grow out the sides of the root ball)

I think it depends on what you want..

Mygirls did a video I watched awhile back about how the plant will usually only get as wide as the pot.

It sounds like you are trying to get a SOG going. Then the width wouldn't matter as much. Assuming you want single cola plants. Thats what you'll get out of the smaller containers.

Just my opinion.

Long is wide, but horizontal. Also, as long you can support them (Supprt and moist) more roots are better.

I have heard that the width of the roots do control the width of the lant, but seeing as how most growers are not looking for wide plants....

I have seen long deep water roots put into a 10 square net pot with Hydroton in a Ebb and Flow and it do great. It was sitting on a almost 1" matt of root and still survived and did/doing great.

It seems that hydro might break alot of the "rules". Could be the massive amounts of nutes already disovled in the water as opposed to the roots extracting the nutes? ( nah, that sounds stupid). But there seems to be some lying to the plant when you are growing in water.
