Hey guys,

I'm not stupid (i guess that is debatable)... I know what hydroponics is. However I think there is a good segment of people that beleive there to be only one type of hydro. These people say "I'm growing 4 plants under 1000watts in hydro"

I realize I could ask each individual what type of hydro they are running, but figure they wouldn't know what I was talking about anyways.

So.... Not counting experienced growers that use a combination of different hydro systems, thus making sense for them to simply say hydro as to not have to explain the system each time. Not them.

The people who think there is only 'hydro'... What do you guess they are referring to? Ebb and flow?

It's really hard to say. There is more than one type. Many people now refer to almost any indoor growing as hydro, it depends on who you talk to. I grow indoors in a soilless mix. Some people call that hydro. Some people say that hydro is only if you are using no growing medium so to speak like ebb and flow. Some people that use aeroponics would also say they are using hydro.

My personal guess as to what people mean by that is that they are indoor growers as opposed to outdoor growers. That is what I find most of the people that I talk to mean. When people tell me that they are growing hydro I ask what set up they use and I've gotten a lot of different answers.

It's an acceptable enough generic term and in most cases it really doesn't matter which type of hydro system for the same 100 old timey basic questions we see a thousand times a day.

almost except hydro can be used with a promix alkso this is called a wick system but with any hydro there is a variety of mediums expanded clay aggregate and rockwool are the most common but you will always run across a less experienced person as to say hydro when not running anything but promix i say i am an organic because i use a promix in a 5 gal bucket. hydro just means that the medium allows for minimal absorbtion (meaning most hydro mediums do not retain much nuts if any at all like rockwool retains not nuts and clay retains a small amount) of nuts and almost immediate drying and oxygenating the root system

I don't think it's really that complicated. It's like are you married or single? Sure, there's lots of stages in between, but really people only care about married or divorced.

Well it's soil or it's hydro....don't care how you are doing it, basically just wanted to know if you were growing in soil.

It's not like everyone would expect you to explain your soil mix instead of just saying soil grower.

Thanks for all the responses. I thought I would just get 5 people telling me I was a moron who should google hydro.

The question stems from my youtube vidoes... I have a DWC and have had two different people comment that they were going to use DWC before they decided to just use 'hydro'. It was the differentiation between dwc and hydro that confused me.

Thanks again guys... trivial question I know, but I really appreciate the input.
